CUPMC Passavant Emergency Department is hiring a casual RN. Casual employees work a total of 36 hours over the course of 6 weeks. This role involves demonstrating knowledge of adult learning principles and applying them in teaching patients, families, students, and new staff. The nurse will provide detailed and appropriate teaching to patients and families to guide them through their episode of care and transition to home. They will support the development of students, new staff, and colleagues, potentially serving as a preceptor. The role requires creating an environment of open dialogue, inquiry, and continuous development by seeking feedback and improving practice. Accountability for professional development to enhance the quality of professional practice and patient care is essential. Active participation in unit-based shared governance, goal setting, and supporting change processes to improve care quality and the practice environment is expected. The nurse will be an engaged partner on the care team, responding willingly to assist colleagues and participating in work that improves patient care and the professional practice environment. Flexibility and adaptability to change are necessary. Developing and maintaining productive internal and external working relationships through accountability, enthusiasm, motivation, and commitment to patients and colleagues is key. Understanding cultural differences and holding peers accountable for healthy relationships is important. Maintaining a balance between work and personal life, modeling safe work hours, time management, and a healthy lifestyle are also expected. Communicating any identified workplace safety hazards to peers and management is required. The nurse will apply the nursing process within the framework of Relationship Based Care to foster a healing environment. Daily goals and a patient-centered plan of care will be formulated, involving the patient as a partner and considering their holistic needs. Critical thinking is required for identifying clinical, social, safety, psychological, and spiritual issues for patients. Strong communication skills are necessary to articulate patient conditions to other providers and to negotiate and recommend changes in patient care and unit practices. Comprehensive patient documentation that promotes caregiver communication is expected. Incorporating national professional organization goals, as well as business unit and health system goals, to improve patient safety, quality, and satisfaction is part of the role. Creating a caring, compassionate, and patient-focused experience by building healing relationships with patients, families, and colleagues is paramount. Active participation in department or unit-specific quality improvement efforts, identifying opportunities for improvement, and taking personal responsibility for enhancing patient satisfaction are expected. Utilizing research and evidence-based practice to support clinical care improvements, identifying research issues or articles, discussing improvement opportunities at multidisciplinary rounds, and influencing patient care plans are also key aspects of the position.
