About The Position

The College of Engineering at Utah State University seeks applicants for a full-time academic-year, (9-month) Professional Practice Assistant Professor (non-tenure track) in support of the college’s first-year Engineering Foundations Program. The position will report to the Associate Dean for Academics and will be administratively housed in one of the college’s departments (Biological Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, School of Computing) based on the candidate’s educational and professional background. The successful candidate will be primarily responsible for teaching classes to support the Engineering Foundations program, the college’s common first-year curriculum. These include but are not limited to introduction to engineering and programming for engineers. Additional teaching responsibilities may include fundamental engineering classes at the sophomore or junior level and discipline-specific classes based on the candidate’s background. The faculty member will teach in a range of teaching delivery modalities including in-person, hybrid, connect, online, and virtual, and will work closely with faculty across statewide campuses to ensure consistency in curriculum, learning outcomes, and student experience. The candidate is expected to have strong focus on first-year success and retention of engineering students.

Requirements

  • B.S. and M.S. in an engineering discipline.
  • Ability to teach introductory courses in the engineering foundation program (introduction to engineering, and programming for engineers).
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work well in a team, especially with undergraduate engineering students.
  • Excellent ability to teach and mentor students individually and in groups.

Nice To Haves

  • PhD in an engineering discipline.
  • Prior experience with teaching undergraduate engineering courses.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching courses to support Engineering Foundations program and other classes as assigned by the Associate Dean for Academics.
  • Working collaboratively with faculty and staff to ensure consistency in delivery of engineering foundation and core courses at statewide locations.
  • Develop and lead initiatives to enhance the retention of students in the college.
  • Other duties as assigned by the associate dean and/or department head.
