About The Position

The Department of Animal and Dairy Sciences is seeking an Asst. Professor of Practice and livestock judging team coach to teach applied courses in animal evaluation and lead a nationally competitive livestock judging program. The position is a 12-month, non-tenure track position with a 100% instruction appointment. The department houses approximately 625 undergraduate students, 40 graduate students, and 26 faculty. It offers a Bachelor of Science degree with several concentrations, as well as Master of Science, Master of Agriculture, and Ph.D. degrees. The department conducts teaching, research, and extension activities across various facilities, including a Meat Science and Muscle Biology Laboratory, a new Animal and Dairy Sciences building, and a forthcoming Livestock Evaluation Laboratory. Research and teaching herds include dairy, beef, horses, sheep, goats, rabbits, and swine.

Requirements

  • B.S. degree or advanced degree in Animal Science or related field
  • Ten or more years of experience in coaching and/or teaching at the collegiate level
  • Collegiate livestock judging experience
  • Knowledge and experience in livestock management and animal husbandry
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to foster a team atmosphere

Responsibilities

  • Instruct undergraduate students
  • Direct a nationally competitive livestock evaluation program
  • Coach the livestock judging team
  • Travel to competitive livestock judging events
  • Coordinate state and regional livestock judging events at youth and collegiate levels
  • Engage in year-round activities to support the livestock judging program, including summer activities
  • Recruit students for the livestock judging program
  • Raise and budget funds to support the livestock judging team
  • Engage with prospective, current, and past supporters and alumni of the livestock judging program
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and members of the department and college
  • Serve on departmental and university committees
  • Participate in departmental recruiting and orientation events
  • Participate in departmental clubs and activities
  • Provide undergraduate advising
  • Direct or assist with summer camps
  • Conduct workshops
  • Occasionally give tours to prospective students
