About The Position

The Professional Nursing Tutor at Southeastern Community College provides tutoring services to nursing prep and pre-licensure nursing students enrolled in the Practical Nursing Diploma and Associate Degree Nursing programs. The Professional Nursing Tutor is a key to successful student accomplishment and provides academic support to students by providing course content clarity, helping them understand difficult concepts, and learning best practices in study and testing skills. The Professional Nursing Tutor is part of the Health Professions Division and reports to the Dean of Health Professions. His/her attitude, personality, knowledge, skills, and motivation contribute to the creation of an effective learning environment. Familiarity with the comprehensive community college philosophy is highly desired. This position is a part-time hourly position with a pay rate of $35.00 per hour. Positions are available at both the Burlington and Keokuk campuses. This position is not eligible for SCC benefits, except for IPERS or TIAA retirement benefits if the eligibility threshold is met.

Requirements

• Graduate of an approved nursing program.
• Registered Nurse in the state of Iowa with an active and unencumbered license.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required or making annual progress towards the degree.
• Two years of experience in clinical nursing required.
• Two years of experience in nursing education preferred.
• Strong human relations and interpersonal skills to interact positively and effectively with diverse populations.
• Ability to use instructional technology and computer software applications to perform work duties.
• Ability to interpret policies and regulations in the performance of work duties including but not limited to Board Policies, Administrative Guidelines, and the State of Iowa administrative rules and regulations, Iowa Board of Nursing regulations, and Nursing program accreditation standards.
• Excellent communication skills (listening, speaking, writing).
• Ability to handle confidential matters with discretion and perform with a high level of personal and professional integrity and ethics.
• Must be able to work cooperately with health officials, other agencies, faculty and students, staff, and administrators.
• Must have the ability to make effective decisions in day-to-day operations.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Nice To Haves

• Familiarity with the comprehensive community college philosophy is highly desired.
• Master’s degree or higher in Nursing Education preferred.
• Five years of experience in clinical nursing preferred.
• knowledge of the course and curriculum development process, active and collaborative instructional techniques, instructional materials, as well as knowledge of the educational processes for adult learners preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide academic tutoring services for nursing prep and PN and/or ADN level nursing students in a variety of nursing areas; maintain currency in all areas of the nursing curriculum; collaborate with the nursing faculty related to student assessment and understanding of student learning needs.
• Assist students with learning in a variety of content areas including nursing pre-requisite courses, pathophysiology and disease processes, pharmacology, fundamental nursing skills, and comprehension of more complex nursing concepts.
• Demonstrate knowledge of the pre-licensure nursing program and curriculum, student learning outcomes, and program learning outcomes.
• Ability to use different teaching methods and transmit information in a manner that is accessible and comprehensible to students.
• Coach students in time management, test-taking skills, and in the preparation of course exams.
• Demonstrate knowledge of exit exams, NCLEX-PN, and NCLEX-RN item types, test plans, and testing processes.
• Demonstrate knowledge or willingness to learn the NCSBN Clinical Judgement Measurement Model.
• Provide consistent guidance to students that align with course content and objectives, and program policies.
• Provide guidance and tutoring individually, and in groups.
• Interpret test results with students in collaboration with faculty, counsel and assess learning problems, and develop individual student remediation plans.
• Meet with students on a regular basis to monitor utilization of remediation strategies.
• Maintain documentation on student remediation plans, processes, and success.
• Provide feedback to faculty related to tutoring services and student success.

• Assist with test proctoring as needed.
• Preserve lines of communication with program faculty and staff including attendance at select nursing education program meetings.
• Meet regularly with students to provide information and support as they progress through the nursing curriculum and prepare to take the NCLEX-PN or NCLEX-RN examinations.
• Demonstrate effective behaviors geared towards student success.
• Work collaboratively with the Accessibility Coordinator.
• Participate in annual review and revision of course goals, course development, implementation, and related testing and grading policies.
• Participate in college activities, professional development, and institutional initiatives beyond instructional duties including recruitment and retention, and participating in committees.
• Implement varied and/or supplemental learning activities to compensate for and/or accommodate individual student needs.
• Willingness to use SCC’s learning management system (LMS).
• Actively participate in the budget process of the college, including timely requests for instructional materials.
• Promptly reports unsafe practices, in accordance with the nursing program and college policies and guidelines, including classroom/lab/clinical safety, following also the college’s program standards and judicial codes.
• Actively supports the college’s non-discrimination policy and conscientiously complies with the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act.
• Assume full responsibility for the development and maintenance of a current individual Professional Development Plan (PDP).

• The assignment will be at the West Burlington and Keokuk campuses with the flexibility and adaptability to work at other off-campus sites within the college district and be adaptable to a variety of classroom settings as academic business dictates.
