Thompson was founded in 1886 as an orphanage and has grown into an organization operating across the Carolinas, Florida Tennessee and Kentucky. Thompson’s continuum of care encompasses three domains: prevention, mental health services and foster care. All Thompson programs are trauma-informed and evidence-based/evidence-informed with the intention of building resilience in our clients (ages 0-18) and their families, both virtually and in person. Our values are Excellence, Innovation, Commitment, Caring and Integrity. As a Professional Mentor in the Friends of the Children-Charlotte (FOTC) department, you will teach male youth important life skills such as avoiding risky behavior, attaining skills for safety and independence, regulating school attendance, and more, according to our National program model. A typical day as a Professional Mentor will include providing long-term mentorship to 8-12 male youth in the school, home, and community setting for 16 hours/month; building relationships with caregivers and partners according to our 2 generational approach to provide resources and referrals for the whole family; self-managing and ensuring documentation of goal-focused outings, hours served, contacts with families, teachers, youth, and others. As a Professional Mentor, your schedule will be non-traditional, but typically around 11 am-7 pm, with some Saturdays and evenings. Mentors serve their youth in person in the community with a radius of 30 miles in Charlotte and surrounding.
