Department Nursing Education Job Summary The Professional Development Specialist advances the professional growth of nurses and interdisciplinary team members through the design, implementation, and evaluation of evidence-based educational programs. Grounded in the ANPD standards of practice, this role supports orientation, competency management, continuing education, role transition, and professional role development. The Professional Development Specialist collaborates across systems to foster lifelong learning, promote regulatory compliance, and drive improved patient care outcomes through quality and practice excellence initiatives.

Requirements

• Master's Degree in related field Required
• 4-6 years Clinical Experience Required
• Experience in professional development, education, or leadership
• RRT-Registered Respiratory Therapist - NBRC - National Board for Respiratory Care Required or PTL-Physical Therapist License - DORA - Department of Regulatory Agencies Required or SLP-Speech Language Pathologist - DORA - Department of Regulatory Agencies Required or OT-Occupational Therapist - DORA - Department of Regulatory Agencies Required
• Strong clinical knowledge relevant to therapy practice
• Ability to design, implement, and evaluate educational programs
• Excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership skills
• Familiarity with regulatory standards and quality improvement practices
• Excellent skills in working with learning management systems and Microsoft Office applications
• Ability to interpret and communicate aggregate education and competency data

Responsibilities

• Orientation and Onboarding
• Designs, implements, and supports structured orientation and onboarding programs for clinical staff.
• Partners with department leadership to ensure orientation content aligns with organizational policies, regulatory standards, and professional practice expectations.
• Facilitates the transition to practice through competency-based onboarding models.
• Provides consultation on best practices in learner support, onboarding structure, and progression through orientation milestones.
• Competency Management
• Develops and maintains competency frameworks supporting initial and ongoing competency validation.
• Collaborates with clinical leaders to identify competency requirements for evolving technologies, procedures, and regulatory standards.
• Designs competency validation tools including checklists, return demonstrations, simulations, and assessments.
• Ensures competency programs align with organizational quality, safety, and regulatory requirements.
• Education and Continuing Professional Development
• Conducts learning needs assessments and practice gap analyses to guide educational planning.
• Designs, delivers, and evaluates evidence-based educational programs.
• Integrates adult learning theory, simulation, technology-enhanced learning, and blended learning strategies.
• Coordinates continuing education activities and supports professional certification preparation where appropriate.
• Utilizes learning management systems and digital platforms to deliver and track education initiatives.
• Collaboration and Interprofessional Partnerships
• Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to support clinical practice improvement and staff development.
• Participates in councils, committees, and workgroups related to education, competency, and professional practice.
• Serves as a liaison between clinical departments, education teams, and organizational leadership.
• Role Development and Professional Growth
• Develops and supports programs related to role transition, preceptor development, and leadership preparation.
• Provides guidance related to career development pathways and professional advancement opportunities.
• Supports initiatives related to workforce development, professional recognition programs, and succession planning.
• Promotes lifelong learning and professional growth within the clinical workforce.
• Inquiry, Evidence-Based Practice, and Quality Improvement
• Participates in evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and practice improvement initiatives.
• Collects and analyzes education and competency data to evaluate program effectiveness.
• Supports translation of evidence into clinical practice through educational strategies.
• Collaborates with quality and patient safety teams to address performance improvement opportunities.
• Resource and Program Support
• Provides consultative support related to learning management system use, content standards, and reporting capabilities.
• Promotes adherence to ethical, regulatory, and organizational education standards.
• Supports efficient and responsible use of educational resources.
• Strategic Planning and Program Development
• Contributes to department and organizational strategic planning related to education and workforce development.
• Identifies emerging learning needs and develops educational strategies to address them.
• Supports implementation of new initiatives, technologies, and clinical programs.
• Professional Practice and Ethics
• Maintains clinical and professional competency within licensed scope of practice.
• Engages in ongoing professional development and continuing education.
• Demonstrates professionalism, ethical practice, and commitment to organizational values.

• Technology and Systems Proficiency
• Demonstrates proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and organizational digital tools.
• Utilizes learning management systems and reporting tools to manage education programs and competency tracking.
• Leverages technology to improve educational delivery, program evaluation, and operational efficiency.
