About The Position

The counselor works within a dynamic environment, serving students and educating them in ways to develop themselves personally, educationally, and vocationally, as well as to enhance their overall mental and emotional well-being. This position will provide counseling, crisis intervention, and overall clinical outreach/educational services to the campus community. Responsibilities include intake, assessment, time-limited individual counseling, group counseling, outreach, consultation, and crisis intervention in the areas of mental health and well-being. Assist with the planning and promotion of well-being initiatives.

Requirements

  • Advanced degree in counseling, psychology, clinical social work or related field from a CACREP accredited program, a program accredited by the APA Commission on Accreditation, or a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.
  • Licensed in a mental health related discipline in the Commonwealth of Virginia or the ability to become licensed in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Experience in brief intervention, mental health crisis assessment and group therapy.
  • Licensed or the ability to become licensed as a professional counselor, social worker, or psychologist in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Demonstrated experience in brief intervention, mental health crisis assessment, and group therapy.
  • Working knowledge of counseling theory and techniques.
  • Knowledge of electronic health records systems.
  • Ability to appropriately assess and intervene in crisis situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues.
  • Ability to treat all people equitably and with a sensitivity to and awareness of cultural differences.
  • Considerable knowledge of professional ethics and the ability to apply to current work.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the developmental issues of college students.
  • Must be flexible and possess the ability to successfully handle multiple tasks/projects simultaneously and work well under pressure, independently, and in a team-oriented environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior professional clinical experience working in a college/university counseling or community setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide outreach, prevention, consultation, and seminar presentations.
