Production Systems Engineer, Edge

Meta•Menlo Park, CA
•$118,000 - $170,000

About The Position

Meta's Edge compute fleet consists of around 162,000 servers across more than 600 locations worldwide. The servers are deployed in Edge PoPs that terminate user connections and in ISP and cellular-provider locations that cache content for partner networks. The Edge Hardware team partners with the Traffic organization, which owns this footprint, to select and qualify hardware, qualify firmware, investigate fleet failures, and define detection and remediation tooling. Because this infrastructure sits directly in the user path, missed hardware faults can affect user-visible availability. As a Production Systems Engineer on Edge Hardware, you will contribute to New Product Introduction and sustaining work across the Edge compute fleet. You will initially own well-defined areas and expand your scope as you ramp. The role involves working with a fellow engineer being hired alongside you, the Dublin team that currently owns the area, broader Edge and hardware reliability teams, and Traffic partners on both coasts.

Requirements

  • Currently hold or be in the process of obtaining a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, a relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience; the degree must be completed before joining Meta.
  • At least 2 years of experience in production systems engineering, infrastructure engineering, network operations, or a related hardware operations discipline.
  • At least 2 years of experience developing infrastructure or hardware-management automation or tooling in Python, Go, or a comparable scripting or systems programming language.
  • Experience with server or network hardware components, including switches, routers, NICs, and compute platforms, with hands-on troubleshooting and failure analysis.
  • Experience with configuration management, fleet management, or hardware lifecycle tooling in a large-scale data center, edge, or cloud infrastructure environment.
  • Experience operating or supporting distributed infrastructure across geographically dispersed sites or points of presence.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with server BMC, iLO, Redfish, firmware upgrade frameworks, or hardware qualification workflows.
  • Experience working across time zones and with cross-functional partners in different sites.
  • Background in Edge, CDN, or distributed infrastructure.
  • Experience working directly with OEM vendors such as HPE or Dell.
  • Familiarity with large-scale data analysis tools.

Responsibilities

  • Qualify successive server generations and new platforms for the fleet, and sustain existing generations through their 3–5 years of deployment.
  • Build out failure detection and remediation coverage by creating checks, porting existing validation to new vendor hardware, and improving noisy checkers that create work for partner operations teams.
  • Requalify end-of-sale components, such as NICs and SSDs, to enable continued purchasing of Edge servers and replacement of failed parts.
  • Improve fleet visibility to surface failures that are currently detected late or not at all.
  • Contribute to firmware qualification for components including NICs, BIOS, BMC, management engine, GPU VBIOS, PSU, and flash.
  • Contribute to multi-vendor enablement by rebuilding provisioning, validation, detection, and remediation assumptions as alternative server vendors are onboarded.
