About The Position

Smartpress is a 100% employee-owned, fast-growing online printing service. We are looking for a Production Supervisor to join our Smartpress Bindery and Print team. You’ll be part of a talented group that collaborates to deliver world-class products to our customers. You will be responsible for overseeing the bindery and print department including various leadership functions, supervising, mentoring and coaching employees. You will lead a team of bindery/digital print leads and operators, ensuring the efficient operation of equipment, adherence to quality standards, and timely completion of print finishing tasks. You are responsible for training new and existing employees on the most efficient and effective methods of machine set-up, SOP, and process flow. You will also be responsible for the overall effectiveness of your team members which includes: managing variable costs such as direct labor and materials, reducing waste, reducing re-work, and supporting Continuous Improvement initiatives and Core Values. This position handles various functions such as performance reviews, staff development, employee engagement, scheduling labor, and addressing any necessary disciplinary actions as required.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent GED
  • a minimum of 3 years experience in a manufacturing environment
  • experience in the printing industry as a Production or Assembly Lead a plus
  • OSHA 10 Hour certification a plus
  • be able to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing. Strong interpersonal skills including, demonstrated listening skills and the ability to present ideas and thoughts concisely and effectively both internally and outside the organization
  • have basic computer skills, including Pace and Google
  • be self-motivated, a fast learner, and show initiative to seek out customer and corporate needs
  • be able to be flexible and reprioritize as needed based on business needs.
  • obtain strong organizational skills to handle multiple projects at the same time, while keeping records detailed and accurate.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and mentor a team of bindery or large format operators, providing guidance, training, and support to ensure employee engagement, optimal performance, productivity, and teamwork through the creation of a safe and inclusive environment.
  • Work closely with Production Leads to plan, organize, and prioritize bindery jobs based on production schedules, customer requirements, and deadlines, allocating resources effectively to meet targets.
  • Operate and oversee the operation of various bindery equipment, including cutters, folders, stitchers, binders, laminators, coaters, and other finishing machinery, ensuring proper setup, calibration, and maintenance or large format machinery.
  • Monitor output quality throughout the bindery process, conducting regular inspections, troubleshooting issues, and implementing corrective actions to maintain high standards of print finishing.
  • Coordinate with prepress, printing, and shipping departments to ensure seamless workflow integration, timely job handoffs, and efficient use of resources to meet project timelines.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements, cost reductions, and efficiency gains within the bindery department, implementing best practices, technology upgrades, and workflow optimizations as appropriate.
  • Set high performance expectations and provide feedback, both positive and constructive to ensure those expectations are met. Use training and skills matrix to identify, develop, and train operators. Mentor and coach Leads furthering their leadership path.
  • Collaborate with customer service to address client inquiries, resolve issues, and ensure customer satisfaction with finished products, providing proactive communication and support throughout the production process.
  • Enforce safety protocols, procedures, and regulations within the bindery department, conducting safety training, inspections, and accident investigations to maintain a safe working environment.
