About The Position

This role involves assisting carpenters and painters in the fabrication, delivery, and installation of custom exhibition casework, museum cabinetry, and fixtures. The assistant will also be responsible for building display elements, performing upholstery, preparing and painting museum spaces, and installing various signage. Additionally, the role includes material handling, shop clean-up, and performing preventative maintenance on tools and equipment.

Requirements

• Must have entry level carpentry and painting skills
• Operating various hand tools, measuring tape and basic equipment used to complete carpentry duties, including drill, hand saw, and other tools used for measuring, cutting, fastening, and drilling
• Ability to walk, stand, crouch for long periods of time and carry out strenuous physical task
• Must be able to work at heights and to lift up to 75 lbs
• Must be detail oriented and have good organizational skills
• Must have valid drivers license and good driving record
• Ability to work both independently with little supervision, and as part of a team
• Capable of operating required equipment and tools in a safe and responsible manner

Nice To Haves

• Prefer candidate who has own transportation and is willing to use it for occasional errands (the museum reimburses for mileage)
• Wall framing and drywall experience a plus

Responsibilities

• Assists carpenters with fabricating, delivering and installing of custom exhibition casework, museum cabinetry and fixtures
• Builds blocks, risers, and performs upholstery to display artwork
• Assists painters in preparation and painting museum spaces: touch-up, prime and paint walls, ceiling, panels, trim, doors, etc.
• Assists in loading and storing of materials and display casework
• Installs didactic panels, banners and other graphic signs inside the Museum spaces
• Helps with shop clean-up and keeps all the tools lubricated and organized
• Perform preventative maintenance on tools and equipment by conducting inspections, lubricating, and cleaning on a daily basis
• Performs other duties as assigned
