About The Position

The Production Shop Assistant will support carpenters in fabricating, delivering, and installing custom exhibition casework, museum cabinetry, and fixtures. This role also involves building blocks and risers, performing upholstery for artwork displays, and assisting painters with preparation and painting of museum spaces. The assistant will also help with loading and storing materials, installing didactic panels and banners, and maintaining shop cleanliness and tool organization. Daily preventative maintenance on tools and equipment is also a key responsibility.

Requirements

• Entry level carpentry and painting skills
• Operating various hand tools, measuring tape and basic equipment used to complete carpentry duties, including drill, hand saw, and other tools used for measuring, cutting, fastening, and drilling
• Ability to walk, stand, crouch for long periods of time and carry out strenuous physical task
• Must be able to work at heights and to lift up to 75 lbs
• Must be detail oriented and have good organizational skills
• Must have valid drivers license and good driving record
• Ability to work both independently with little supervision, and as part of a team
• Capable of operating required equipment and tools in a safe and responsible manner

Nice To Haves

• Own transportation and willingness to use it for occasional errands (museum reimburses for mileage)
• Previous experience with painting
• Wall framing and drywall experience

Responsibilities

• Assists carpenters with fabricating, delivering and installing of custom exhibition casework, museum cabinetry and fixtures
• Builds blocks, risers, and performs upholstery to display artwork
• Assists painters in preparation and painting museum spaces: touch-up, prime and paint walls, ceiling, panels, trim, doors, etc.
• Assists in loading and storing of materials and display casework
• Installs didactic panels, banners and other graphic signs inside the Museum spaces
• Helps with shop clean-up and keeps all the tools lubricated and organized
• Perform preventative maintenance on tools and equipment by conducting inspections, lubricating, and cleaning on a daily basis
• Perform other duties as assigned
