Production Mechanical Engineer, Space

Anduril•Costa Mesa, CA

About The Position

Anduril’s Space team develops AI-powered capabilities for Space Domain Awareness, Space Control, and Command and Control, including integrated hardware and software systems such as Lattice for Space Missions and modular payloads. The Production Mechanical Engineer owns production readiness for space hardware, taking maturing and flight-proven designs into repeatable, higher-rate manufacturing. The role paces design changes in alignment with program needs and build schedules, improves producibility and reliability, and works across manufacturing, supply chain, and test engineering to support production.

Requirements

  • BS or higher degree in engineering or a hard science.
  • CAD skills on any platform and ability to create high-quality engineering drawings that meet common industry standards, including GD&T.
  • Experience taking hardware designs into manufacturing and production, including design for manufacturing and assembly and drawing release.
  • Experience transitioning hardware from prototype or low-rate production to higher-rate production.
  • Working knowledge of BOM structures, revision control, and engineering change orders (ECO/ECN), ideally within a PLM/PDM system.
  • Demonstrated hands-on fabrication and assembly skills, including experience with hand tools, mill, and lathe.
  • Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals, including heat transfer, statics, solid mechanics, and materials.
  • Familiarity with tolerance analysis and inspection methods.
  • Excellent attention to detail; highly motivated and self-starting, able to work autonomously without supervision, and organized and willing to establish scope and requirements for ill-defined problems.
  • Passion for defending the United States and its allies.
  • Ability to obtain and hold a U.S. Top Secret security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • 4+ years of mechanical design or production/sustaining engineering experience in a professional setting with space hardware.
  • Experience in NX/Teamcenter or equivalent CAD/PLM.
  • Experience with nonconformance disposition and Material Review Board, root cause and corrective action (RCCA), and first article inspection (FAI).
  • Experience designing tooling, fixtures, and ground support equipment to improve build and test throughput.
  • Ability to integrate electronic components such as PCBAs, motors, and sensors into mechanical designs.
  • Experience developing code in higher-level languages such as Python, MATLAB, or C++ for analytical models, data acquisition, and automation.
  • Experience with statistical process control, tolerance stack-ups, or design of experiments (DOE) to improve yield.

Responsibilities

  • Use first principles to simplify designs, reduce part count, and apply design for manufacturing, assembly, and test (DFM/DFA/DFT).
  • Modify and mature designs to resolve production issues involving fit, tolerance, assembly, and yield.
  • Update designs to reduce build and test cycle times, improve first-pass yield, and remove assembly, integration, and test bottlenecks.
  • Own bills of material and engineering drawings, including releasing and maintaining part and assembly drawings, GD&T, BOM structures, engineering changes, revisions, and effectivity.
  • Propagate engineering changes through assembly hierarchies and keep parent assembly models, drawings, and BOMs current and consistent.
  • Act as the Responsible Engineer for hardware in production, dispositioning nonconformances and authoring red-lines and rework or retrofit instructions.
  • Partner with manufacturing, supply chain, and test engineering to transition designs from low-rate to higher-rate production and establish repeatable work instructions, tooling, and fixtures.
  • Build and validate prototypes and production trial builds, analyze failures, and apply lessons learned to designs and build processes.
  • Travel to test sites, production facilities, and vendors as needed.
  • Create technical documentation, including assembly and work instructions, procedures, test plans and reports, vendor specifications, and statements of work.

Benefits

  • Highly competitive equity grants are included in the majority of full-time offers and are considered part of total compensation.
  • Top-tier benefits for full-time employees, including a comprehensive, competitive benefits package available at little to no cost to employees.
