About The Position

Hancher Auditorium and the Office of Performing Arts & Engagement is seeking to hire a 100%25 full-time Production Manager. Step into the spotlight at Hancher Auditorium, where world‑class artistry meets cutting‑edge production! As our Production Manager, you will serve as an expert production-focused facilitator between Hancher Auditorium and a range of constituents, including visiting artists, faculty and student performers, production colleagues in the academic Performing Arts Production Unit, faculty/staff/student campus partners at-large, student production staff, union laborers, and community members. Hancher builds toward the University of Iowa's performing arts vision and serving our core constituents–campus, community, and artists–through our work as a 50+ year-old university arts presenter and steward of the Hancher Auditorium facility. We center our work within the physical space of Hancher Auditorium while also fostering partnerships across our campus and community.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in technical theatre or stage management, or equivalent combination of related education and experience is required.
  • Demonstrates considerable (typically 3-5 years) experience in technical production including a practical knowledge of theatrical systems to include: lighting, performance sound, rigging and personnel management.
  • Demonstrates considerable experience working in a multipurpose facility presenting events including Broadway, dance, theater, orchestra, chamber music as well as popular/commercial events.
  • Demonstrates reasonable experience working with professional touring companies.
  • Demonstrates reasonable experience in management.
  • Demonstrates reasonable experience working with union laborers.
  • Ability to work for extended periods of time standing, walking, lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including nights and weekends.
  • Demonstrates an extensive proficiency level in: excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrates a history of excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills.

Nice To Haves

  • A master’s degree is preferred.
  • Experience working, scheduling, and negotiating agreement terms with professional stagehands union is highly desirable.
  • Experience working within an educational institution.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze, research and identify strategic needs, and allocate resources appropriately.
  • Work with programming staff to determine viability of future performances that are under consideration.
  • Determine communication plan for unit and oversee appropriate channels and frequency of communication to departments, support staff, faculty directors, guests.
  • Hire, develop and manage the performance of staff: ensure staff are compliant with UI policies and procedures.
