About The Position

North American Stamping is expanding and looking to hire an experienced Press (Metal Stamping) Production Supervisor to join their team. North American Stamping Group, founded in 1978, is a privately held company that explores innovative processes and technologies to stay on the leading edge of the automotive industry. With strategic locations across North America, they serve as a Tier II supplier of components, systems, and aftermarket products for the automotive industry, specializing in seating, ride control, exhaust components, heat shields, noise, vibration and harness (NVH), chassis and structural, and window regulators. Their sales have grown annually at a compounded rate of 18.0% for the last eight years, tripling their business and establishing them as one of the largest leading Tier II automotive stamping and assembly suppliers. The Production Group Leader reports to the Production Manager or designate and is responsible for overseeing and coordinating all manufacturing-related activities in their designated area. This role involves providing motivation, Job Instruction Training, and Mentoring to Team Leaders and Team Members, focusing on Safety, Quality, efficiency, and cost reductions using the TQPS principles of NASG. The Group Leader ensures Team Leaders maintain standardized work processes and train team members in proper methods, Lean, 5-S, and TQPS tools to maintain and improve Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) within their area.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated Leadership, Communication, & Facilitation Skill Sets
  • Prefer 2 years as an Area / Production Leader - managing others preferably in a fast-paced Stamping/Welding Environment.
  • Minimum three (3) years of press experience with progressive and/or transfer dies.
  • Weld assembly process experience is also preferred.
  • Demonstrated capability of using measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers, gauging, etc.)

Responsibilities

  • Conducts daily and weekly safety inspections and training to ensure departmental operations and personnel comply with OSHA and corporate Safety Policies and Practices.
  • Ensures and enforces the use of Safety Blocks, lockout/tag out procedures, and all safety curtain/guards during operation.
  • Reports all accidents, injuries, illnesses, and near misses, assisting Team Leaders in tracking performance and countermeasuring problems and risks.
  • Communicates all accident information personally during communication meetings.
  • Reviews and submits suggestions to improve the safety environment in assigned areas.
  • Trains and coaches Team Leads in creating a mentally-engaged, physically, emotionally, and professionally safe environment.
  • Frequently checks on team members by visiting the area and staying engaged to support their welfare.
  • Personally observes team members' techniques as they perform job functions and trains/coaches team leads on their observation techniques.
  • Improves techniques and methods for awkward movements to minimize physical burdens and collaborates with Safety and EH&S experts to continuously improve ergonomics.
  • Develops a 5-S plan, reviews the process with check sheets, and mentors Team Leaders on desired standards.
  • Evaluates the 5-S condition daily by observing the process area and coaches Team Leads on abnormalities, following up on any 5-S conditions not within standard.
  • Assists Team Leaders or their assigned designee in training team members in Standardized Work practices and follows up on any concerns.
  • Actively listens for team members' techniques or methods that potentially improve standardized work and observes that team members are following standard work.
  • Checks 1 or 2 processes within the boundary area daily, ensuring all processes are checked each week.
  • Leads by example to ensure consistency of standardized work by team leads and all team members.
  • Checks to confirm the continuous improvement of Standardized Work and follows up to ensure changes are made or abnormalities are resolved.
  • Ensures adherence to the ongoing use of the Standardized Work Layered Process Audit system.
  • Performs checks to ensure Team Leads train using the standardized work teaching methodology.
  • Monitors the training, coaching, and mentoring of each trainee and acts as a resource to Team Leaders.
  • Confirms Team Leads validate job breakdown sheets and standardize work processes with the team.
  • Assists in the training of audit team members in standardized work and ensures the Team Leader completes the training matrix.
  • Assists Team Lead in providing department/new hire orientation as required for replacements.
  • Audits part quality throughout the shift and assists team members on first/last off part quality checks at changeover.
  • Drives SMED (Single-Minute Exchange of Die) by coaching and mentoring changeover times to ensure targets are met or exceeded.
  • Performs final visual audit inspection of all parts leaving the press area for quality.
  • Verifies that containment pans are being used as specified for batch quantities and ensures proper containment procedures are followed when poor quality is detected.
  • Ensures the Containment Checklist procedures are executed if product becomes contaminated.
  • Assists with Requisition of Corrective Actions related to Quality Issues.
  • Allocates manpower as needed within the boundary area to meet production requirements and adheres to targeted labor quotes.
  • Ensures presses and equipment are running at targeted run rates and submits TCS Worksheets if rates can be exceeded.
  • Provides direction to team leads and team members to maintain compliance with process standards.
  • Monitors the hourly production board to ensure team leads are keeping abreast of the current production rate.
  • Plans, coordinates, and supervises the activities of assigned personnel to efficiently and productively meet production schedules and holds employees accountable for their performance.
  • Responds as primary support to team lead calls when needed and escalates immediately when a line is down.
  • Continuously monitors and records KPIs (safety, quality, efficiency, downtime, etc.) for the boundary area, identifying and implementing countermeasures when abnormalities occur.
  • Backs up team leads, provides first response to line problems (product or process), documents problems, resolves them when possible, and follows up with resources to assure correction.
  • Coordinates shift activities and personnel schedules to maximize throughput in the area of responsibility.
  • Fills in as needed for any assigned job in the area of responsibility, including the Team Leader's role in case of absence.
  • Confirms quality of materials and finished goods.
  • Ensures set-up and operation of equipment in accordance with production requirements, procedures, and policies.
  • Enters all Production data into ShopEdge accurately, efficiently, and immediately after shift completion.
  • Follows Standard Operating Procedures (e.g., dies/fixtures come out if they are not running).
  • Suggests methods of improvement (e.g., Continuous Improvement Plan & TMI Suggestions using electronic suggestion log) while coaching and mentoring Team Leaders.
  • Produces and assists in the writing and implementing of the area's process production documents (SOPs), process-related tracking, and investigation reports.
  • Identifies opportunities to reduce waste and increase effectiveness.
  • Completes and reviews production process documents.
  • Conducts walk-throughs to confirm team members are adhering to daily activities (5-S, TPM, etc.).
  • Tracks team member time off & attendance and responds in a timely manner to any related issues.
  • Tracks team member training and ensures all team members maintain the expected level of training on required documents, procedures, & processes.
  • Follows overtime procedure to assign team members to work on weekends and holidays.
  • Responsible for appraisal & discipline of work team members.
  • Conducts hourly review of Production Lean Boards.
  • Writes and follows up on Work Orders as needed for repairs in the assigned area.
  • Assists with other Manufacturing requirements as needed.
  • Leads actions to counteract a problem's root cause, monitors results, and standardizes changes made to correct the problem.
  • Is proactive in resolving problems in the cell and elevates the need for assistance as necessary.
  • Goes to see and observes problems firsthand, investigates, and ensures an effective understanding of the facts/data.

  • Mentors the team leader to continuously improve their processes towards True North utilizing Lean principles and TQPS processes at the cell and department levels.
  • Communicates with the next shift any and all issues/concerns resulting from the shift's operations.
  • Provides timely and effective feedback to help team members strengthen specific skill areas needed to accomplish a task or solve a problem.
  • Discusses information concerning safety, quality, inventory, production schedules, etc., in team meetings (huddles) and fosters continuous improvement through communication.
  • Listens and talks to team members to get a better sense of their concerns and issues while driving the TQPS philosophy.
  • Assures upward communication of the issues and/or successes of the cell on an as-needed basis.
  • Completes required paperwork such as production record charts, quality information, and logbooks for shift-to-shift communication.
  • Evaluates and reviews goals with each team member, providing feedback, correction, or direction as needed.
  • Ensures that all work cells are completed and replenished and adherence to keeping KPI boards updated as required.
  • Reports all quality, production, or safety problems to the Production Manager.
  • Addresses problems and implements corrective actions immediately and initiates a temporary process change if the problem cannot be resolved quickly.
  • Ensures work orders are submitted for items needing repair in their area.
  • Assists Team Leaders in tracking all Work Orders, Tooling, or Maintenance for timely and accurate repairs.
  • Reviews and issues die set-up sheets as updated by Team Leaders and team members.
  • Is available for A.I. team meetings as required and requested.
  • Ensures adequate information is passed to on-coming shifts to avoid unnecessary downtime.
  • Leads by example in promoting safety practices and policies, including initiating start-of-shift stretches, wearing proper PPE, and holding all team members accountable for wearing theirs.
  • Follows LOTO procedures and reminds the team about the importance of Hazardous Communication labels and SDS information.
  • Demonstrates strong work ethic, job knowledge, and honesty to gain/keep the respect of team members.
