About The Position

North American Stamping Group, a Tier II supplier of components, systems, and aftermarket products for the automotive industry, is seeking a Tooling Engineer for their TNN1 facility in Portland, TN. The company has experienced significant annual sales growth and is an industry leader in manufacturing stampings and automated assemblies. The Tooling Engineer will work with leadership to develop and maintain efficient and reliable tooling processes for the Production Department, ensuring on-time delivery, quality standards, and budget adherence. This role also involves troubleshooting production issues and serving as a backup for the Tooling Manager.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Certified Toolmaker or 5 years’ experience in Tool and Die field.
  • Certified Tool and Die Maker or relevant experience.
  • Self-motivated, self-directed, and able to make and meet specific goals in the Tooling Department.
  • Willing to learn or possess computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and CAD.
  • Minimum 5 years Tool and Die maker experience.
  • Must be able to clearly speak, read, write, and understand English.
  • Demonstrated basic computer skills in Outlook, Excel, Word.
  • Experienced at using AutoCAD and 3-D modeling software.
  • IATF16949 / ISO14001 / toolmaker baseline training

  • Mistake Proofing Philosophy, Forklift Certification
  • Blueprint / GD&T
  • Project Management
  • Overhead Crane Certification
  • Ability to stand while operating assembly equipment for extended periods.
  • Ability to talk, see, and hear.
  • Ability to walk, sit, and stand for extended periods.
  • Able to lift frequently 35 pounds and occasionally lift, move, and carry up to 75 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred.
  • Completed Apprenticeship Program preferred.
  • Experience at an OEM and/or Tier 1/II supplier to automaker (preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Work from the tool room schedule to ensure production tooling and equipment meet customer requirements.
  • Ensure tools are operating at peak efficiency in the toolroom and press department.
  • Delegate troubleshooting and die maintenance responsibilities clearly and concisely.
  • Assist Toolmakers/Apprentices and toolroom staff with quality and tooling decisions for long-term solutions.
  • Address problems and implement solutions to improve efficiencies, process, product flow, safety, and quality.
  • Collaborate with other Managers and Team Leaders on daily issues.
  • Properly and completely fill out all reports.
  • Report quality, production, or safety problems to the Tooling Manager.
  • Establish a tracking system to grade tooling vendors on quality and delivery, documenting findings.
  • Document changes to detail prints and/or procedures for dies and track results of repairs, modifications, and improvements.
  • Maintain an assigned group of dies, including design review and part quality.
  • Adequately stock the tool crib with spare parts, using a computer to track stock and maintain organization.
  • Quote and purchase replacement details according to budget.
  • Purchase spare parts, die sections, and supplies for the tool crib at the best value.
  • Perform incoming inspection of all tooling entering the plant, including die details and shop supplies.
  • Establish quarterly goals and objectives with the Tooling Manager.
  • Drive continuous improvement through tooling cost reductions, improved usage, or lower prices without sacrificing quality.
  • Participate in continuous improvement of tooling, such as coatings and different metals.
  • Be available for overtime and training as required.
  • Work within the budget allowed for the assigned area of responsibility.
  • Accept additional job duties from the next level leader.
