About The Position

The Production Grinder is responsible for removing gating material, and blending and grinding casting surfaces to meet customer specifications. This role involves ensuring that castings are finished to precise dimensional tolerances by removing the minimum amount of metal necessary. The position also requires a strong commitment to safety and adherence to all plant and department safety rules.

Requirements

  • Grinding skills and working knowledge of grinding tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Ability to follow instructions, read, write, and perform basic arithmetic calculations.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and follow specifications on Tech Cards.
  • Ability to lift and/or maneuver objects weighing thirty to fifty pounds and occasionally up to eighty pounds.
  • Ability to work in difficult working conditions which may include exposure to noise, dust, temperature extremes and other elements for extended periods of time.
  • Individuals may have contact with or be required to handle hazardous waste.

Responsibilities

  • Grind and blend gating and defect areas on castings to meet dimensional tolerances.
  • Remove the minimum amount of metal necessary to remain within specified tolerances.
  • Review tech cards and blueprints to determine grinding requirements and stock removal.
  • Determine acceptance limits for grinding and blending defects.
  • Operate counter-balanced belt grinders, fixed grinders, hand-held grinders, air tools, and hand tools.
  • Wear required protective shields, clothing, wrist supports, glasses, and gloves during grinding operations.
  • Visually inspect castings during grinding operations to ensure compliance with specifications.
  • Make dimensional measurements on specified parts to ensure compliance with specifications.
  • Adhere to plant and department safety rules.
  • Safely operate all equipment and tools.
  • Identify and report safety problems.
  • Handle hazardous waste as required.
  • Perform minor maintenance and change belts on equipment.
  • Complete logs and records.
  • Perform other tasks as directed.
  • Provide training and work direction to B-level grinders.
