About The Position

Under the direction of the Team Lead, this position grinds and smooths surfaces, weld seams, and weld spatter on units prior to finishing operations. This position differs from a Level II Grinder as it does not involve assisting supervision with tasks such as training and enforcement of safety procedures. The incumbent may be in the process of being trained on these tasks but does not perform them independently or regularly. This list of duties and responsibilities is not all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities as management may deem necessary from time to time.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.
  • External applicant: 3 months to 4 years related experience and/or training in grinding, sanding, or similar work in a manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to read a tape measure.
  • Ability to work overtime.
  • Attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Examines and feels the surface of parts for defects and missing welds.
  • Selects the grade of abrasive belt, wheel, or disk according to specifications, knowledge of abrasives, and the condition of the metal, and attaches it to the grinder.
  • Starts the grinder and moves it over the surface of parts to remove scratches, laminated metal, excess weld material, and burs.
  • Polishes ground areas with a finer abrasive to produce a smooth and unmarred surface.
  • Replaces worn abrasive disks, wheels, and belts.
  • Inspects all parts for missing or incomplete welds.
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance.
  • Keeps the work area clean and organized.
  • Follows safety procedures and instructions.
  • Maintains productivity throughout the shift.
  • Meets production expectations set by the team lead/plant manager.
  • Works quickly and accurately with minimal mistakes.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
