About The Position

Noisy Creek is seeking a talented, detail-oriented Production Designer to help produce publications, campaigns, and creative projects across print and digital platforms. This entry-level role works with the creative team on editorial layouts, advertising, marketing materials, and other assets for The Stranger, Portland Mercury, Chicago Reader, and other Noisy Creek properties. The designer will work within established visual systems while bringing fresh ideas, exploring multiple creative directions, and taking ownership of assignments to help ensure consistently excellent work.

This is a hybrid, union position. Noisy Creek describes itself as a creative organization focused on invigorating local media and supporting democracy, civic engagement, and thriving local communities.

Requirements

• Meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to getting work right the first time.
• Solid understanding of design fundamentals, especially typography, hierarchy, and spacing.
• Knowledge of grid-based design and judgment about when to break the grid.
• Ability to follow design best practices while also recognizing when to break the rules.
• Initiative to take on tasks proactively.
• Ability to work collaboratively and independently.
• Curiosity and willingness to explore multiple project iterations and design directions.
• A strong design portfolio demonstrating a variety of work across print and digital platforms and assets.

Responsibilities

• Create editorial layouts.
• Produce sales materials, including sell-sheets, print issue marketing promotions, general sales promotions, and event promotional materials in print and digital formats.
• Build print and digital advertisements for outside clients and internal promotions.
• Upload and maintain the Noisy Creek issue archive on Issuu, including adding all Stranger and Mercury back issues.
• Create and maintain Google Slides decks.
• Take ownership of assignments, manage project details, and contribute ideas and multiple design directions.
