As a Product + Underwriting Specialist for Auto, you work directly with the company's leadership team to develop new product offerings and underwriting guidelines and implement regulatory changes. Your efforts contribute to the growth and profitability of the company's auto insurance portfolio. Your success in this role comes from superior analytical, communication and research skills. You use your creativity, inquisitiveness, and resourcefulness to identify opportunities and overcome challenges. You excel with time management, balance detail with priority, handling multiple projects and tasks with ease. This position will work closely with cross-functional teams, including product and underwriting management, marketing, claims, and operations, to ensure that our product offerings are competitive, compliant, and meet customer needs. Requirements

  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of auto insurance underwriting principles.
  • Good understanding of risk management and impact assessment in an insurance environment.
  • High-quality organizational, analytical, research and communication skills.
  • Strong competitor product research and industry analysis skills.
  • Skilled at managing and prioritizing multiple tasks.
  • Uses creativity and resourcefulness to identify opportunities and overcome challenges.
  • Natural curiosity and enjoys learning.

  • Good understanding of insurance profitability and performance metrics.
  • Provides and receives constructive feedback.
  • A degree or diploma in business, commerce, economics, insurance or marketing or equivalent work experience.
  • A minimum of 3 years of continuous personal lines automobile insurance underwriting or product development experience with specific experience of ICBC Autoplan and optional coverage in BC.
  • Working knowledge of the insurance legislation and regulatory framework in the province of your experience.
  • Experience conducting wording analysis to identify coverage gaps and develop new wording in plain language.
  • Experience working on projects in a cross-functional fast-paced environment.
  • Experience in developing supplementary resources or training materials.
  • A high level of proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, with the ability to learn new technologies.
  • Fluency in English

Nice To Haves

  • A CAIB, CIP, or FCIP designation is preferred.
  • French is a desirable asset.

Responsibilities

  • Developing and implementing internal underwriting strategies, product offerings, and responses to regulatory changes or compliance audits.
  • Creating and maintaining updated underwriting guides, rules, and resource libraries to ensure accuracy and consistency.
  • Reviewing and analyzing complex files to provide expert support for our claims and legal teams.
  • Interpreting and leveraging data insights to drive informed decision-making and strategic prioritization.
  • Conducting in-depth research on emerging markets, innovative products, and evolving risk landscapes.
  • Evaluating and approving complex underwriting files and high-level decisions as appropriate.
  • Building and executing remediation plans for system errors while managing documentation for regulatory reporting.
  • Monitoring market trends, industry shifts, and regulatory announcements to keep us ahead of the curve.
  • Tracking and reporting on product performance to ensure long-term growth and stability.
