About The Position

AES is seeking a Product Solutions Engineer to support product development for advanced grid applications within the Solutions Engineering team. This role involves designing and prototyping system architectures for new products, conducting electro-magnetic transient (EMT) simulations for microgrids and grid-forming applications, developing operational requirements and system control integration guidance, coordinating project de-risking objectives, executing new technology capabilities at pilot projects, and documenting learnings for product transfer. The successful candidate will have a background in electrical engineering, systems engineering, or renewable energy engineering, with experience in PSCAD being a plus. They will be able to translate pilot project requirements into power plant component and site-level architectures, review and define technical specifications of sub-system renewable power plant components, and demonstrate a passion for new technologies, clean energy, and decarbonization. The position is located in Louisville, CO, with potential for up to 30% travel and remote work possibilities.

Requirements

  • BS or MS in a relevant field.
  • 2+ years experience required. Experience in clean energy strongly preferred.
  • Must have experience in power systems modeling softwares like PSCAD and/or PSSE.
  • Must be a team player capable of working with engineering, project management, and commercial teams across the organization.
  • A willingness to learn about a wide array of renewable energy technologies – PV, wind, power conversion systems (inverters), microgrids, green hydrogen, electric vehicles.
  • Strong documentation and technical reporting experience.
  • Must be willing to persevere through failures during new technology development/execution, and eventually turn any failures into success.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in PSCAD is a plus.
  • Experience in Python or other coding languages is a plus.
  • Experience in power plant design is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Identify high-level project objectives and coordinate with equipment SMEs to select equipment that defines a potential solution.
  • Develop and test Microgrid Control Sequence of Events and coordinate deliverables for successful execution of microgrid capable projects, with project engineers.
  • Conduct PSCAD EMT simulations for new applications in the Inverter based resource (IBR), microgrids, grid-forming, and data center solutions space.
  • Coordinate with equipment suppliers to develop, refine, prototype, and validate product performance specifications.
  • Develop project specific system architecture concepts and technical documents for development of system functionalities.
  • Work with Solution Engineering’s Technology Solutions group to determine de-risking objectives, review test plans, and analyze results from the testbeds.
  • Condense lessons learned during the technology de-risking phase and transfer to the project’s design and execution phase.
  • Review results from offline and real-time simulations of AES power plants and transfer learnings to the development of the product.
  • Support test plan development and execution for functionality testing at a pilot project site.
  • Transfer project specific materials to product engineers aiding in the development of engineering product documents (templates, design guidelines, tools, and training materials).

Benefits
