Product Owner (Cloud and Platform) - HL7/DICOM

Intelerad•Remote, UNITED STATES
•$86,250 - $115,000•Remote

About The Position

The Product Owner, Universal Gateway, owns and prioritizes the backlog for the single ingress and egress layer that carries DICOM studies and HL7 messages into and out of Intelerad’s cloud platform. The service supports IntelePACS, InteleArchive, InteleShare VNA, InteleViewer, and InteleOrchestrator, replacing product-specific gateways, relays, and edge servers with a standardized service for DIMSE and DICOMweb traffic, HL7 routing and normalization, authentication, and multi-tenant isolation. This is a hands-on, technically deep role working day to day with platform engineering, SRE, and Hosting teams to deliver reliable services for clinical imaging workflows where downtime can affect patient care. The Product Owner connects the Product Manager’s vision with the development team’s execution. The role combines knowledge of DICOM, HL7, and healthcare integration with agile delivery experience on platform or infrastructure products. It calls for day-to-day trade-off decisions that keep delivery aligned with broader product strategy, and direct hands-on experience with medical imaging interoperability, integration engines, or healthcare connectivity infrastructure.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, business, or technology, or equivalent experience.
  • At least 4 years of experience as a Product Owner, Technical Product Manager, or integration or interface engineer, including at least 2 years working on platform, infrastructure, or integration products rather than end-user feature applications.
  • Working knowledge of agile and Scrum methodologies and hands-on experience with backlog and sprint management tools such as Jira or Azure DevOps.
  • Hands-on working knowledge of DICOM—including DIMSE services, DICOMweb, AE title configuration, and conformance statements—and HL7 v2, including ADT, ORM, and ORU, demonstrated through writing requirements for, configuring, or troubleshooting production interfaces.
  • Experience partnering directly with engineering teams and leading technical discussions about feasibility, sequencing, and trade-offs, including high availability, failover, and multi-region design for Linux-based, containerized services.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and attention to detail in requirements definition and quality validation.
  • Working understanding of cloud infrastructure and operations, including AWS or equivalent, containers, infrastructure as code such as Terraform and Ansible, networking such as load balancers, VPN, TLS and mTLS, and observability tooling.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with medical imaging systems such as PACS, VNA, or RIS, or integration engines and routers such as Mirth/NextGen Connect, Rhapsody, Cloverleaf, or DICOM routing products.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead through influence rather than authority.
  • Exceptional communication and organizational skills, with a track record of collaboration across engineering, design, and cross-functional business teams.
  • Experience defining SLAs, RTO/RPO, or reliability targets for clinical or other mission-critical systems.
  • Familiarity with multi-tenant SaaS architectures, tenant isolation, and healthcare security and privacy obligations such as HIPAA, GDPR, or equivalent.
  • Exposure to digital pathology (whole slide imaging) or high-volume modality workflows such as mammography and large CT.

Responsibilities

  • Own and prioritize the Universal Gateway product backlog and write clear user stories and acceptance criteria for DICOM DIMSE services, DICOMweb, HL7 v2 inbound and outbound messaging, and pathology whole slide imaging ingestion.
  • Partner with engineering and design throughout refinement, sprint planning, stand-ups, reviews, and retrospectives; make timely decisions on scope, sequencing, and priority, and escalate strategic or financial trade-offs to the Product Manager or Director as needed.
  • Define and validate non-functional requirements, including failover SLA, RTO/RPO, multi-AZ high availability, and throughput and latency targets by modality; verify delivered features meet requirements, DICOM PS3.4 conformance, and the published DICOM Conformance Statement.
  • Gather and synthesize input from Sales, Customer Success, Support, and customers to inform backlog refinement; support the Product Manager with market research, competitive analysis, and feature-level requirements.
  • Track and report sprint and release progress, velocity, and delivery metrics; proactively flag scope or timeline risks and incorporate user acceptance testing and beta-program feedback into subsequent backlog iterations.
