Product Owner, Global Digital Products

Sun LifeWaterloo, ON
CA$90,000 - CA$140,000Hybrid

About The Position

We’re looking for a Product Owner who thrives at the intersection of design, engineering, and scale. In this role, you’ll assist with product direction for our global Design System consisting of a library of components, patterns, and standards that powers consistent, accessible, and beautiful experiences across our Canadian, U.S., and Asia markets. Reporting to the Director, Global Product Management, you’ll be a dedicated Product partner working on the global design system work, operating alongside Technical, Design and Product counterparts. Our global design system is the connective tissue between dozens of product teams across three regions. As a Product Owner, you’ll translate the needs of those teams into a clear, prioritized roadmap of new components, enhancements, and design updates — then partner closely with engineering and design to deliver them on realistic, well-communicated timelines.

Requirements

  • Ideally 5+ years of industry experience, where you have demonstrated experience as a product owner or product manager, delivering digital products end to end.
  • Strong backlog management and prioritization skills, with the ability to balance competing stakeholder needs
  • Track record of setting and meeting realistic delivery commitments in a cross-functional environment.
  • Working familiarity with React-based front-end development and component-driven architecture (you don’t need to code, but you need to speak the language)
  • Understanding of design systems, component libraries, design tokens, and accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG)
  • Solid grasp of agile development methodologies and ceremonies
  • Excellent communication skills, with confidence partnering with Technical Leads, Designers, and senior stakeholders
  • Ability to build relationships and align decisions across a large, complex, multi-region organization
  • Comfortable coordinating across Canadian, U.S., and Asia time zones and markets
  • University degree in Business, Design, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Mid–senior level experience in digital product management, ideally including platform, design system, or developer-facing product work

Nice To Haves

  • A natural collaborator who listens actively and communicates with clarity and conviction
  • Pragmatic about delivery — you protect quality while keeping commitments realistic and transparent
  • Comfortable operating at the seam between design and engineering, fluent enough in both to earn trust
  • Detail-oriented and systems-minded, energized by reusable patterns and long-term leverage
  • Sensitive to the needs of global, multi-market stakeholders and able to navigate regional differences

Responsibilities

  • Translate strategic priorities into actionable product roadmaps, ensuring the design system enables consistent, scalable digital experiences across business units and global markets
  • Shape roadmap planning and prioritization by providing component-level expertise, delivery insights, and dependency management, helping ensure strategic objectives are achievable and aligned with business needs.
  • Collaborate with Experience Design, Engineering, and platform teams to identify opportunities, manage trade-offs, and proactively address design and technical constraints that impact product delivery and adoption.
  • Drive the successful delivery and adoption of design system capabilities by leveraging data, stakeholder feedback, and delivery metrics to inform decisions and continuous improvement efforts
  • Influences product roadmap direction through customer insights, platform expertise, and stakeholder engagement supporting the broader digital product strategy
  • Owns and maintains a prioritized backlog of new components, enhancements, and design updates that serves Canada, U.S., and Asia consuming teams
  • Identifies and evaluates emerging design system, accessibility and front end practices, recommending enhancements that improve platform adoption, scalability and customer experience
  • Partner daily with Technical and Design product leads to scope component development and design updates and to drive realistic, achievable delivery plans and timelines
  • Translate consuming-team needs into clear user stories and acceptance criteria for new and updated components
  • Manages the end-to-end delivery path — from intake and prioritization through development, release, and adoption
  • Enables and prepares the team to be several sprints ahead with a healthy, well-groomed backlog
  • Serve as Product Leader for the Global Design System, guiding roadmap execution, influencing priorities and driving alignment across product, design leaders and technology teams globally
  • Own platform demand management and prioritization, balancing enterprise needs against strategic objectives, engineering capacity and customer impact
  • Drive alignment among business, technology, experience design and regional leadership teams on enterprise platform priorities
  • Influence prioritization decisions across product teams and senior stakeholders with competing business objectives
  • Coordinate across time zones and markets to ensure global components meet regional requirements (localization, accessibility, brand)
  • Champion consistency, accessibility, and developer experience as first-class outcomes of the system
  • Define and track adoption and quality metrics; use them to prioritize investment and demonstrate impact
  • Partner with design and engineering to maintain documentation, contribution guidelines, and versioning standards
  • Ensure compliance with accessibility, brand, regulatory and technology standards across markets

Benefits

  • Flexible Benefits from the day you join to meet the needs of you and your family
  • The opportunity to move along a variety of career paths with amazing networking potential
