About The Position

WoodmenLife is looking for a Product Owner Intern to join our team for the Summer 2027 program. This 10-week internship offers a dynamic and innovative work environment where interns contribute value-added work and enhance the company's talent pipeline. The program provides real-world experience and mentorship to prepare interns for meaningful careers and to make a positive impact in their communities. WoodmenLife, a not-for-profit life insurance company with over 135 years of service, focuses on protecting the financial future of families and making a difference in communities. Interns will gain broad exposure to the organization through meetings with executive leadership and division leaders, and will present a capstone presentation on their internship experience. The role involves acting as a key member of an Agile team, defining and prioritizing user stories, collaborating with stakeholders, ensuring user stories meet the Definition of Done, and translating product features into actionable stories. Interns will apply analytical skills to break down epics into smaller stories and create clear, concise, and testable user stories adhering to the INVEST criteria. Participation in Agile development processes like sprint planning, stand-ups, and retrospectives is expected.

Requirements

  • Sophomore, Junior or Senior in college with area of study in Business Administration, Project Management, Information Systems or related fields
  • Must have a 3.5 or higher GPA
  • Ability to work 38.75 hours per week
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively while working collaboratively.
  • Proficient computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • The ability to provide seamless, trustworthy, attentive and resourceful (S.T.A.R.) customer service.

Responsibilities

  • Gain broad exposure to the WoodmenLife organization by meeting weekly with the Internship Cohort, collectively with Executive Leadership, and one-on-one with leaders at the division level.
  • Summarize and present capstone presentation of the internship experience including project accomplishments, skill development, and key learnings.
  • Serve as a key member of the Agile team, acting as the business owner or customer proxy to define and prioritize user stories in the team backlog.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure backlog items reflect business needs and deliver maximum value to end users.
  • Take a leading role in ensuring that user stories meet the Definition of Done and align with strategic objectives.
  • Act as a liaison between the development team and business units to translate product features and user requirements into actionable stories.
  • Apply strong analytical and logical thinking to break down larger epics into smaller, valuable stories that can be delivered within Agile iterations.
  • Create clear, concise, and testable user stories that are independent, negotiable, valuable, estimable, small, and testable (INVEST criteria).
  • Participate in Agile development processes, including sprint planning, stand-ups, and retrospectives, to deliver high-quality software in a collaborative environment.
