About The Position

The Product Engineer will combine engineering design knowledge with hands-on manufacturing process expertise to support the development, production of and optimization of high-quality gearbox and speed reducer components. This role will work closely with engineering, operations, quality, and production teams to create, modify, and prove out designs using CAD, CNC programming, machining processes, and quality verification methods. This position is located in Asheville, NC and reports to the Engineering Manager in Springville, NY.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related Engineering field is required.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a design or manufacturing position
  • Experience with CAD design, 3D modeling, and mechanical design is required
  • Knowledge of machine methods, techniques and operating skills necessary for exacting tolerances and finish requirements, interrelated dimensions, formed sections and contours
  • Ability to work from drawings, routers, sketches and job layouts
  • Ability to read various measuring equipment including scales and dial indicators
  • Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose machinery, equipment, and tooling
  • Working knowledge of CNC machine control panel.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with gearboxes, speed reducers, or engineered industrial products is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with CNC and manual machining processes is preferred.
  • Experience in CNC programming, validating machining processes, and conducting dimensional or quality checks is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, revise, and support designs for gearboxes, speed reducers, machined components, tooling, fixtures, and related manufacturing equipment.
  • Use 3D CAD software, to create, modify, and maintain engineering models and drawings.
  • Apply design knowledge to ensure parts and assemblies can be manufactured efficiently using available CNC and manual machining processes.
  • Perform design calculations and prepare equipment, material, or component specifications as needed.
  • Review customer drawings, sketches, layouts, and design data to determine dimensions, configurations, tolerances, material requirements, and manufacturing feasibility.
  • Support design validation through prototype development, testing, benchmarking, and production feedback.
  • Partner with engineering and production teams to ensure designs are practical, manufacturable, repeatable, and aligned with quality standards.
  • Create, develop, and improve CNC programs and manufacturing processes to produce machined parts for high-quality gearboxes and related components.
  • Program and process CNC machines using CAM software, GibbsCAM.
  • Create and support programs and processes for CNC machines, including Mori Seiki lathes, Mori NZ lathes, Okuma lathes, and Okuma mills, where applicable.
  • Plan machining operations, machining step sequences, tooling selection, machine attachments, work holding methods, spindle speeds, and feed rates.
  • Assist production machine operators with tool tryouts, new or modified tools, and process adjustments.
  • Conduct quality checks during program prove-out and production launch to confirm that machined parts meet drawing, tolerance, finish, and functional requirements.
  • Use measuring equipment such as scales, dial indicators, and other inspection tools to verify part dimensions and quality.
  • All other duties as assigned by management.
