Product Engineer

Coherent•Sherman, TX

About The Position

The Product Engineer owns product yield for InP edge-emitting lasers and photodiodes. The role monitors electrical and optical device performance across wafers, lots, and manufacturing stages; identifies process or epitaxial excursions and quality concerns; and analyzes wafer- and die-level test data to prioritize yield improvements. The engineer works with epitaxy, process engineering, device design, test, manufacturing, quality, reliability, and R&D teams to investigate failures, establish root causes, and implement and verify corrective and preventive actions. The position also plans experiments, supports product characterization and specification reviews, and evaluates process changes to sustain product performance and manufacturability. It communicates trends, findings, actions, and progress through technical reports and product reviews, and provides technical support to internal and external stakeholders. The role uses semiconductor device physics and data analysis to improve yield, reliability, efficiency, and product performance, while supporting product transitions and documenting specifications. The work takes place in office and semiconductor manufacturing environments. Employees must follow site and corporate EHS procedures. Depending on location, the role may also include responsibilities for applicable quality and environmental management standards.

Requirements

  • Minimum 4 years of relevant experience in semiconductor product engineering, device engineering, process engineering, or a related technical role.
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, Optical Engineering, or a related discipline, or an equivalent degree.
  • Experience analyzing semiconductor device performance, investigating manufacturing yield loss, and applying structured root cause analysis.
  • Strong understanding of semiconductor laser fundamentals, including threshold current, optical gain and loss, slope efficiency, spectral behavior, and temperature-dependent performance.
  • Strong root cause analysis and problem-solving skills, including the ability to connect device behavior to possible epitaxial, fabrication, or test-related causes.
  • Working knowledge of statistical analysis, process control, and design of experiments.
  • Proficiency in Python for data analysis and automation.
  • Ability to take ownership of yield issues, prioritize investigations, and follow corrective actions through implementation and verification.
  • Strong interpersonal, teamwork, written communication, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams and adapt to new technologies and industry developments.
  • Ability to perform computer-based data analysis, prepare technical documentation, and participate in technical discussions.
  • Ability to access laboratory and manufacturing areas, including occasional standing and walking.
  • Willingness to follow company values and applicable EHS requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with III-V semiconductor devices, particularly InP lasers or photodiodes.
  • Experience with JMP/JSL, SQL, or similar tools for analyzing large manufacturing datasets.
  • Familiarity with JMP or similar statistical analysis tools.
  • Experience in yield improvement initiatives.
  • Proven product engineering experience with laser devices or optoelectronics.

Responsibilities

  • Own product yield for InP edge-emitting lasers and photodiodes, monitoring performance, identifying yield detractors, and driving measurable improvement.
  • Monitor electrical and optical device trends across wafers, lots, and manufacturing stages to identify process or epitaxial excursions, performance shifts, and quality concerns.
  • Analyze wafer-level and die-level test data, including yield summaries, failure paretos, wafer maps, and statistical comparisons.
  • Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, quality, reliability, test, device design, epitaxy, and R&D teams to investigate failures and establish root causes.
  • Develop, implement, and verify corrective and preventive actions.
  • Plan and evaluate experiments to understand relationships between epitaxial properties, fabrication processes, and device performance.
  • Support product characterization, specification reviews, process-change evaluations, and product transitions.
  • Improve yield, reduce costs, and enhance laser product performance, reliability, and efficiency.
  • Use data processing, scripting, and automation to analyze manufacturing datasets and inform decisions.
  • Communicate yield trends, investigation findings, corrective actions, improvement progress, and product specifications through reports and product reviews.
  • Provide timely technical support and guidance to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Stay current with industry trends and emerging laser-device technologies.
  • Follow applicable site EHS procedures and corporate EHS standards.
  • Depending on location, execute or maintain applicable quality and environmental management standards.
