Product Designer, MarianaOS

Mariana MineralsSan Francisco, CA
$180,000 - $210,000

About The Position

Mariana Minerals is seeking its first dedicated design hire to elevate MarianaOS, their software platform. This role is crucial for simplifying complex, data-heavy workflows and ensuring the platform is intuitive and human-centered. The designer will work across teams to manage the underlying complexity of MarianaOS, making it easy and fast for hundreds of employees who rely on it daily. This is not primarily a pixel-polish role, but one focused on making genuinely complicated processes feel obvious.

Requirements

  • Proven ability to simplify complexity, transforming complicated products or datasets into clear and understandable interfaces.
  • Experience designing for real, non-trivial products, with the ability to articulate difficult tradeoffs made during the design process.
  • Experience designing for technical, operational, or data-heavy products, rather than consumer applications.
  • Ability to distill complex problems into a clear narrative of user actions, motivations, and goal achievement.
  • An opinionated perspective on great visual design, aiming for future-looking aesthetics that modernize the industry without compromising usability.
  • Strong collaborative and cross-functional instincts, with a preference for working closely with PMs and engineers.
  • Demonstrated judgment on complex problems, not necessarily tied to a specific job title.
  • AI fluency and adaptability, comfortable using AI tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, v0) in the design process.
  • Experience prototyping in code, not solely relying on Figma.
  • Comfort designing in the open, shaping products as they are built and used.
  • Good pixel craft and the ability to produce clean, professional visual work.
  • Seasoned specialist with a deep complex-product portfolio.
  • Significant experience working with teams to simplify data.
  • Experience as the first designer at a startup is ideal.
  • Demonstrated ability to set short-horizon design direction.

Nice To Haves

  • Deep technical ability, such as owning a design system solo or writing production code (engineers can share this load).
  • Experience as a UX designer, a design-minded product builder, or an engineer who loves design and focuses on prototyping and systems.

Responsibilities

  • Design clear, usable information architecture and flows for complex, data-dense workflows in MarianaOS, ensuring ease of use for daily operations.
  • Grow and own the design system, including coded components, to enable engineers to build user interfaces efficiently with agentic tools.
  • Partner with Product Managers and engineers from initial problem framing through UI development, participating in the entire product development process.
  • Provide and receive direct design feedback to enhance visual quality and deliver valuable, usable products.
  • Prototype directly in code when it's the most efficient method, collaborating live with engineers to expedite design delivery.
  • Set short-horizon design direction (weeks to a couple of months) to maintain coherence for a fast-shipping engineering team.
  • Conduct and synthesize lightweight user research and feedback loops with customers and internal stakeholders to ensure product alignment with user needs.
  • Define best design practices and establish the operational framework for design within the company as it grows.
