Product Design Engineer, Steam Turbines

Revak Keene Turbomachinery•La Porte, TX

About The Position

Fox Innovation & Technologies Inc. is seeking a mechanically inclined Product Design Engineer specializing in steam turbines. The role provides engineering support for repair, overhaul, reverse engineering, and modernization of critical turbine equipment. It combines engineering design with hands-on execution, using engineering software, physical inspections, teardown findings, field or shop measurements, and legacy documentation to develop solutions for steam turbine components and assemblies. The engineer works closely with operations teams—including machinists, welders, project managers, and field personnel—to restore, improve, or remanufacture turbine equipment. Engineering decisions are applied in the shop and field as well as through manufacturing. The position is based in an industrial machine shop environment, may involve travel between facilities, and may require occasional extended hours based on operational or customer needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or another related field.
  • At least five years of engineering experience in a manufacturing, repair, or rotating equipment environment, with meaningful hands-on exposure to steam turbines.
  • Strong familiarity with steam turbine construction and critical components, including rotors, blades or buckets, diaphragms, casings, glands or seals, bearings, valves, and related hardware.
  • Familiarity with applicable API standards for steam turbines and rotor repair, especially API 611, API 612, and API 687.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks and familiarity with 3DExperience or similar PLM platforms.
  • Proficiency in mechanical calculations and machine design principles, including GD&T, fits and clearances, tolerance stack-up, and manufacturing methods such as turning, milling, grinding, and welding.
  • Ability to interpret turbine teardown data, dimensional inspections, legacy drawings, and incomplete or outdated technical information and convert them into practical engineered solutions.
  • Willingness and ability to work hands-on in a dynamic industrial environment, including shop-floor interaction.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to connect engineering theory with steam turbine operating realities and practical execution.
  • Confident communication and ability to work with cross-disciplinary teams, including engineers, machinists, welders, field personnel, project managers, and clients.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to sit, stand, bend, walk, and use hands or tools for extended periods.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated experience with steam turbine inspection, repair, overhaul, reverse engineering, or component design.

Responsibilities

  • Reverse engineer steam turbine equipment and components using field or shop data, physical inspection, teardown findings, and legacy documentation.
  • Perform mechanical calculations and analyses, including bolting, stress, deflection, fits and clearances, and tolerance stack-up, to support turbine repair and manufacturing decisions.
  • Use SolidWorks and other engineering software to create or validate models, assemblies, and manufacturing drawings for turbine components and repair solutions.
  • Review and approve detailed drawings for steam turbine components, including rotors, blades or buckets, diaphragms, casings, glands, bearings, and valve-related components, with appropriate GD&T and assembly considerations.
  • Translate turbine inspections, dimensional data, and teardown findings into clear engineering instructions for manufacturing, refurbishment, and assembly teams.
  • Lead and participate in internal design reviews, customer bid clarifications, project kickoff meetings, and technical discussions about steam turbine scope and repair strategy.
  • Provide engineering disposition and problem-solving support on the shop floor and, when required, in the field, coordinating with quality, machinists, welders, field service, and operations staff.
  • Create internal engineering documentation packages for turbine repair, reengineering, or modernization solutions in alignment with company procedures and client specifications.
  • Support drawing release and revision workflows in accordance with document control standards, incorporating as-found and as-built conditions.
  • Ensure repaired or newly manufactured turbine components fit together correctly in final assembly and meet client expectations for function, quality, and maintainability.
