Product Design Engineer

PlayerZero•San Francisco, CA
•$210,000 - $250,000

About The Position

PlayerZero is seeking a senior, hands-on individual contributor to own the product experience across product UI/UX, design systems, and user research. The role focuses on making complex software workflows understandable and helping people work effectively with AI agents. Initial priorities include establishing a consistent design system across the application and defining patterns for human–agent collaboration, including how users delegate work, understand agent progress, review results, and intervene. The designer will develop a clear design vision and partner with leadership, Product, and Engineering to carry it through to shipped details. Functional prototyping is central; production frontend coding is not required. Success means PlayerZero feels more consistent and intuitive across the application, shared patterns help the team ship cohesive experiences, and customers can confidently understand, direct, and review agent work. The design vision should translate into shipped improvements and evolve based on user learning.

Requirements

  • A strong portfolio of shipped digital products demonstrating systems thinking, interaction design, and visual craft.
  • Experience owning complex product design independently, from an ambiguous problem through a detailed, usable solution.
  • Ability to connect individual interactions into a coherent system and create patterns that extend across features and workflows.
  • Strong judgment in hierarchy, typography, layout, and interaction behavior, with attention to accessibility, loading states, errors, and other experience details.
  • Ability to build functional prototypes using tools suited to exploring and communicating an idea.
  • Experience using customer research and feedback to inform decisions, evaluate tradeoffs, and improve shipped work.
  • Clear communication and a collaborative approach to developing ideas, giving feedback, and working through constraints.
  • Ownership and follow-through, including identifying work that needs attention, bringing others into it, and staying engaged through delivery.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with collaboration platforms, developer tools, complex enterprise products, or AI-powered experiences.
  • Background in product design, design engineering, or a related discipline.

Responsibilities

  • Own product experience work from problem understanding through exploration, detailed design, prototyping, and implementation review.
  • Establish shared components, interaction patterns, and guidance to create a coherent design system and improve team efficiency.
  • Design human–agent collaboration experiences that make agent actions, progress, outputs, and limitations understandable, with clear ways for users to guide and review work.
  • Simplify complex workflows by connecting features into intuitive journeys through information architecture, navigation, and interaction design.
  • Build functional prototypes to explore behavior, test assumptions, and work through design decisions with users and teammates.
  • Lead focused customer research and usability testing, using findings alongside product judgment and design craft.
  • Partner with Product and Engineering to balance user needs, product direction, and technical constraints; review implementation and refine experiences after launch.
  • Develop a design vision and collaborate with leadership, Product, and Engineering to bring it through to shipped work.
