•$25 - $39•Hybrid

About The Position

The Product Data Engineering Intern works alongside experienced engineers on American Family Insurance’s service-oriented data and AI platform, which supports teams across the company, including security and AI. The intern will build and deploy an AI agent, integrate it into a real workflow, and contribute to shared platform tools that help make future agent development easier. The intern is paired with a mentor engineer throughout the internship and will deliver working software and a final presentation. The summer internship is a 10- to 14-week program that starts in mid to late May and ends in August. Interns gain exposure to different areas of the business and have opportunities for networking and coaching. The position is based in Madison, Wisconsin, and is hybrid. New Employee Orientation is generally held in person at the Madison headquarters or another core AmFam location, though some sessions may be virtual depending on scheduling and availability.

  • Must be pursuing a bachelor’s, master’s, or Ph.D.
  • Major or program must align with the internship role.
  • Demonstrable hands-on project or internship experience developing AI solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Develop an understanding of the business, corporate culture, and structure to support the work.
  • Contribute creative ideas and strategic approaches in response to changing situations.
  • Work with a mentor and partner team to understand a business problem and break it into clear tasks for a working AI solution.
  • Build and deploy an AI agent on the platform, providing tools, managing context, and handling retries, timeouts, and unexpected model output.
  • Contribute to a shared platform capability, such as evaluation, observability, or internal developer tooling.
  • Follow team standards for code quality, testing, code review, and security, and write tests for shipped code.
  • Help measure the effectiveness of an existing AI solution, including turning real failures into test cases and sharing findings with the team.
  • Participate in stand-ups, planning, and code reviews; ask questions early and keep the mentor informed about progress and blockers.
  • Add logging, metrics, and tracing so others can understand agent activity, cost, and health.
  • Document and hand off the work, and present it to the team at the midpoint and end of the internship.

Benefits

  • Interns may be eligible for a one-time hiring bonus to assist with housing costs, depending on proximity to an AmFam office location.
