About The Position

Veeco is seeking an experienced Product Applications Engineer to support its global MOCVD customer base in arsenic-phosphide-based semiconductor materials and devices. This customer-facing technical role applies hands-on expertise in III-V epitaxy, MOCVD reactor operation, process development, and materials characterization to help customers achieve application and production goals. The engineer independently resolves technical issues, selects appropriate methods and techniques, and collaborates with internal and external technical stakeholders. The position works across customer success, process technology, and product development, translating customer needs into process solutions and future product improvements. The role executes process demonstrations for new system installations at customer facilities, operates MOCVD equipment, characterizes As/P-based materials, and supports system startup and process performance goals. It partners with customers to troubleshoot process optimization, epitaxial performance, reactor behavior, and process-to-hardware interactions. The engineer may also contribute to applications development for As/P-related materials used in microLED, datacom, and telecom applications, and relay customer insights into Veeco’s future product roadmap. Travel up to 65% domestically and internationally is required for customer-site and Veeco-facility installations, demonstrations, training, troubleshooting, and process support.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related technical field with 5+ years of related experience; or a Master’s degree with 3+ years of related experience; or a PhD in a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Hands-on experience with epitaxial growth of compound semiconductor materials such as GaAs, InP, GaN, SiC, or related III-V or wide-bandgap materials.
  • Understanding of how equipment design and operation affect the epitaxial growth process.
  • Experience with characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction, photoluminescence, particle measurement, surface inspection, electrical testing, or related analytical methods.
  • Hands-on epitaxial growth experience with operation and maintenance of MOCVD process equipment, particularly focused on As/P and GaN materials.
  • Ability to work independently on day-to-day technical assignments while seeking guidance appropriately on new or complex customer issues.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, including evaluating data, identifying root causes, and recommending practical solutions in customer-facing situations.
  • Ability to build productive working relationships with internal teams and external customers, including senior technical personnel.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to clearly present complex technical information to customers, cross-functional teams, and larger audiences.
  • Curiosity, ownership, urgency, and a hands-on approach to solving complex process- and equipment-related problems.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with MOCVD process development, reactor operation, process transfer, customer demonstrations, or field applications support.
  • Experience with compound semiconductor device structures, device fabrication flows, or device performance characterization.
  • Prior experience working directly with customers, cross-functional engineering teams, or production environments.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with customer development and production teams to understand materials, epitaxy processes, and device performance objectives, and translate those objectives into practical MOCVD process support plans.
  • Execute process demonstrations, system startup activities, and customer-site application support for As/P MOCVD systems.
  • Operate MOCVD equipment and develop process understanding across reactor operation, recipe control, hardware-process interactions, and epitaxial film performance.
  • Characterize epitaxial films and device structures using physical, optical, and electrical techniques such as X-ray diffraction, photoluminescence, particle analysis, and electrical measurements.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues involving epitaxial uniformity, material quality, reactor behavior, process control, and customer-facing performance requirements.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Product Management, Sales, and Marketing on product demonstrations, customer presentations, design reviews, product lifecycle planning, and new product development.
  • Develop application notes, process guides, customer-facing technical materials, and internal knowledge documents based on experimental results and field experience.
  • Communicate technical findings through reports, presentations, customer discussions, and cross-functional reviews.
  • Travel up to 65% domestically and internationally to customer sites and Veeco facilities for installations, demonstrations, training, troubleshooting, and process support.
