About The Position

ATI is seeking a Process Metallurgist to support its Specialty Materials business unit at the Monroe, North Carolina location. The role provides post-melt technical support to the Monroe Billet production area, covering hot working, conditioning, inspection, and related processes. Open-die press and radial forging experience is strongly preferred. The Process Metallurgist serves as the internal technical contact for thermo-mechanical processing operations that transform as-cast material into marketable, customer-compliant products. The position supports production on the shop floor, develops and maintains metallurgical expertise, and leads or contributes to process improvement, product development, and quality-system activities. The role also supports outside conversion operations, internal Conversion Services, customer audits and inquiries, and collaboration with Operations, Maintenance, Value Stream Metallurgy, and R&D.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science with a metals focus.
  • Internship or work-study experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably with an industrial metals supplier.
  • Learn and work within ATI's safety and business cultures, processes, and products; manage interactions with internal and external groups; and bring a continuous-improvement mindset.

Nice To Haves

  • One to three years of industrial process metallurgy experience related to manufacturing Ni/Fe/Co-base alloys, titanium, and/or specialty steel alloys.
  • Experience with continuous-improvement and lean-manufacturing methodologies.
  • Working knowledge of wrought-metals processing, including melting, press forging, radial forging, hot rolling, conditioning, and heat treatment.
  • Ability to explain metallurgical principles critical to metals processing, such as recrystallization, strengthening mechanisms, and microstructure-property relationships.
  • Experience applying thermal/deformation modeling tools to solve problems and optimize processes.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt, Black Belt, or related certification.
  • Open-die press and radial forging experience.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the internal technical contact for thermo-mechanical processing operations that transform as-cast structure into marketable, customer-compliant product.
  • Maintain a visible, consistent shop-floor presence to provide technical support to Operations when production obstacles arise and identify process-improvement opportunities.
  • Provide technical support for outside conversion operations and internal Conversion Services as required.
  • Develop and maintain expertise in thermo-mechanical processing of Ni/Fe/Co-base alloys, titanium, and specialty steel alloys through experimentation, technical literature review, best-practice exchanges across ATI, and technical conferences.
  • Support all products manufactured in the Monroe Billet area, including tracking critical-to-quality process metrics and identifying opportunities to improve yield, cycle time, and cost.
  • Maintain and standardize hot-working operating and mill instructions.
  • Collaborate with Operations and Maintenance personnel to improve manufacturing standards, workplace safety, equipment performance, and product quality.
  • Plan, execute, and manage product and process continuous-improvement programs.
  • Apply statistical data analysis and thermal/deformation modeling tools as needed to support initiatives.
  • Lead and participate in cross-functional continuous-improvement activities, including risk assessments, problem-solving reports, cause-and-effect diagrams, process audits, and standard work.
  • Communicate results to management, colleagues, and customers through written reports and oral presentations.
  • Support Value Stream Metallurgy and R&D in developing, evaluating, and standardizing new products and processes.
  • Create and implement items, recipes, mill instructions, and other quality-system documents.
  • Provide technical support during customer audits and inquiries.
