About The Position

ATI is seeking a Process Engineering Intern for its Vandergrift Operations for summer 2027. The intern will support engineering and operations teams in a heavy industrial metals manufacturing environment. The internship is designed for students pursuing a technical degree and involves process improvement projects, production support, data analysis, troubleshooting, and technical initiatives to improve safety, quality, productivity, and cost performance. The role provides hands-on experience in industrial process engineering, metals manufacturing, production support, technical troubleshooting, data analysis, and continuous improvement. The intern may work in production areas, laboratories, and technical office settings, and will follow applicable safety procedures and environmental requirements. Personal protective equipment is required in designated areas; work may involve exposure to noise, heat, moving equipment, chemicals, and other conditions common to heavy industrial metals manufacturing.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemistry, or a related technical field at an accredited university.
  • Strong interest in heavy manufacturing, metals processing, process engineering, metallurgy, or industrial problem-solving.
  • Basic understanding of chemistry, material properties, thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid flow, phase transformations, or mechanical testing concepts.
  • Ability to collect, analyze, and interpret technical data.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a cross-functional team environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel and PowerPoint.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior laboratory, manufacturing, engineering, or industrial internship experience is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Support process engineers with daily production activities, troubleshooting, and technical problem-solving.
  • Assist with evaluating manufacturing processes such as cold rolling, annealing, heat treating, pickling, finishing, or inspection.
  • Collect, organize, and analyze process data to identify trends, variation, inefficiencies, or opportunities for improvement.
  • Support investigations related to product quality, equipment performance, process capability, material flow, or production delays.
  • Assist with developing and updating process documentation, work instructions, standard operating procedures, and technical reports.
  • Participate in plant trials, process audits, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement projects.
  • Evaluate the impact of process parameters on chemical composition, material properties, surface quality, mechanical performance, or product consistency.
  • Work with operations, maintenance, quality, metallurgy, and engineering teams to support process improvements and corrective actions.
  • Assist with tracking key performance indicators related to yield, productivity, scrap, rework, downtime, and quality.
  • Support implementation of process changes, best practices, and safety improvements.
  • Follow safety procedures and environmental requirements while working in office, laboratory, and plant environments.
  • Prepare and present project findings, recommendations, and progress updates to technical and management teams.
