About The Position

Corning is a world leader in glass, ceramic, and materials science, known for pushing the boundaries of what's possible. Our Optical Communications segment has evolved into a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions. This segment is divided into carrier network and enterprise network product groups, serving broader communications industries. The Process Development Engineer will design, develop, improve, and industrialize Optical Fiber manufacturing platforms. This role involves enabling significant reductions in manufacturing costs and developing new products with advanced attributes. The engineer will focus on understanding and solving limitations in manufacturing processes using scientific methods and engineering principles, translating these solutions into engineering requirements and equipment designs. Work is typically performed as part of a technology development team focused on improving yields, process rates, machine utilization, product quality, environmental compliance, raw material yield, and energy usage.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of physical phenomena (e.g., static and dynamic physics, heat and mass transfer, etc.) with experience in utilizing this knowledge to improve manufacturing processes and product attributes.
  • Use scientific methods and fundamental engineering principles to solve problems thoroughly and effectively, using well-designed and executed process experiments.
  • Drive for root cause fundamental understanding of challenging problems.
  • Display a bias for action in situations of uncertainty, with pro-active attention to issues and problems.
  • Work well both within a multi-disciplined team, and independently with minimal oversight, and thoroughly carry assignments to completion.
  • Ability to work hands-on with the equipment using typical hand tools, instruments, and measurement devices.

Nice To Haves

  • A process engineering background, preferably in chemical transport and reaction processes as well as resultant product and equipment performance.
  • Ability to translate engineering solutions to requirements, then further to process and/or equipment designs which deliver all required and promised performance criteria.
  • Effectively use relevant measured and/or modeled data to drive decisions and actions.
  • Determine and recommend best solution from a series of alternatives within given guidelines.
  • Communicate effectively in various settings to provide and present necessary information to Project, Department, and Site leaders.
  • Experience with data processing software (e.g. Jump, Python, PowerBI) and Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Familiarity with fiber optics and materials.
  • Modeling simulation software experience optional (e.g. Aspen, Matlab, Fluent).
  • Equipment design experience and familiarity with CAD tools (Autocad, Inventor etc) is optional.

Responsibilities

  • Learn and understand process and equipment functions in the area of responsibility.
  • Design, develop, and industrialize manufacturing platforms (process + equipment) for existing and revolutionary manufacturing processes.
  • Re-design machine/process systems or sub-systems to solve safety, performance, or quality issues, or reduce either the as-installed or long-term operational costs.
  • Provide troubleshooting support to the prototype platform during the development and demonstration phase.
