About The Position

This internship program offers a unique opportunity to interact with vendors and customers on technical and design issues, collaborate with process development personnel to enhance equipment, processes, products, and packaging quality through review sessions. The role involves utilizing Lean Six Sigma Methodologies to reduce costs and waste, establishing and monitoring performance metrics via data analysis to generate improvement recommendations, and implementing quality control methods like statistical process controls (SPC). Interns will spend time on the production floor observing daily operations in a fast-paced USDA, FDA food manufacturing facility. In the event of an absence, the position will be filled by trained personnel.

Requirements

  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Conversant in both English and metric systems.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both written and verbally in English as it pertains to individual position.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the public.
  • To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • 2-year college degree, manufacturing experience preferably in a food environment, or equivalent combination education work experience.
  • Above average mathematics skills.
  • Familiarity with statistics, e.g., (SPC) and control charts.
  • Thorough knowledge of computers and their programs.
  • Detail oriented with above average organizational skills.
  • Self-motivated, possess high energy, and have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to interact in a dynamic team environment while displaying tact and diplomacy with peers and management.
  • Willingness to adhere to the Quality Engineering Philosophy.

Nice To Haves

  • Lean Six Sigma Certification a plus.
  • Experience with Smart Draw and Minitab software a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Complete assigned projects and initiatives using Lean Six Sigma tools and methodologies.
  • Work side-by-side with management staff to discover inefficiencies in business processes and determine the best ways to align business methods with financial goals.
  • Evaluate and develop manufacturing processes by studying product and process requirements, applying knowledge of product, process, design, assembly, tooling, and materials; conferring with equipment vendors; and soliciting observations from operators.
  • Improve manufacturing efficiency by analyzing and planning workflow, space requirements, and equipment layout.
  • Assure process efficiencies are monitored by establishing performance metrics based on equipment and process capabilities, establishing standards, and confirming manufacturing's current state processes.
  • Provide manufacturing decision-making information by data mining, analysis, and summarizing performance metrics trends.
  • Gather, analyze, and report business data and inputs to identify issues, trends, or solutions.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge through continual professional development.
  • Work with the Safety department on job safety analyses (JSAs).
  • Maintain, analyze, manage, and improve metrics, aggregating, creating dashboards, and internal reporting.
  • Provide technical assistance in identifying, analyzing, evaluating, and developing quality systems and procedures.
  • Report issues at set frequencies to all appropriate departments to drive continuous improvement and corrective and preventive actions.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain performance metrics, including trends for complaints, product right first time, product holds, yields, raw material supplier performance inspections, and internal/external audit results.
  • Improve and define data editing and standardizing processes.
  • Provide follow-up monitoring, documenting, and feedback of completed initiative controls.
  • Act as a liaison between departments and a variety of business partners.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of data capture systems.
  • Monitor standards and controls in relation to the manufacturing of high-quality soup and seafood products, including activities in receiving, staging, prep, processing, packaging, storage, and shipping.
  • Carry out various batch control tests and product sampling to ensure the process is in control, e.g., statistical process control (SPC).
  • Ensure a smooth process flow, maximizing volume and efficiency while committing to exacting specifications and uncompromised quality.
  • Work with other key departments to ensure proper techniques, staffing, training, and methods are in place and effectively result in consistent and high-quality end products.
  • Confer with engineers or other personnel to implement operating procedures, resolve system malfunctions, or provide technical information.
  • Use sample data to create control charts to identify process shifts.
  • Other responsibilities with similar skill and work conditions as assigned.
  • Responsible for completing required paperwork accurately and honestly as applicable.
  • Must adhere to all corporate GMPs (Good Manufacturing Practices), established SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures), and all Food and Employee Safety policies.
  • Must adhere to all Allergen control programs and procedures as applicable.
  • Responsible for reporting suspicious packages, activities, and individuals.
  • If monitoring CCPs (Critical Control Points), must be trained in HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) and adhere to approved HACCP plan(s).
