About The Position

This position description sets out the essential duties and responsibilities of the position, details the knowledge, abilities, skills, licenses, certifications, education, and experience necessary to be successful in the role, and lists the equipment normally operated by, scope of supervision, and usual physical demands on the incumbent. POSITION SUMMARY: The Probation Services Supervisor serves in the Probation Services Department and reports to the Probation Services Manager. The Probation Services Supervisor is responsible for day-to-day operations and supervision of a team of Probation Officers in one of several Probation Services Sections.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of probation supervision; supervisory principles; counseling; social work; corrections; court system procedures and processes; criminal justice system processes and requirements; criminal law as it relates to criminal sentencing; court probation services; investigative methods and interviewing; high-risk behavior and treatment; sentencing alternatives and diagnostic tools; victim/offender mediation.
  • Ability to apply supervisory practices to practical work situations; exhibit good organizational skills; perform duties and responsibilities of a probation officer; work independently; practice the principles of the court’s strategic plan; physically make an arrest; participate in training to properly utilize a conducted energy weapon (Taser) and pepper spray; participate in a physical examination that includes an agility evaluation.
  • Skill in oral and written communications; evidence-based safety; CPR and first aid; operation of a computer; application of job software programs; coaching and training; maintaining documentation; chemical dependency assessment and intervention; proofreading and editing reports; auditing casework; coaching and motivating staff.
  • All court employees are expected to stay current in their areas of technical expertise; maintain attention to detail; exhibit good organizational skills; work effectively on own initiative and by cooperating with others; engage in active listening; speak and write clearly and concisely; demonstrate good manners, friendly demeanor, and professional behavior; uphold the policies, procedures, and practices of the court; maintain the confidentiality of sensitive and privileged information; and represent the court with honesty and integrity.
  • A bachelor’s degree in psychology, sociology, criminal justice, or related field, and five years of experience as a probation officer.

  • A valid state of Ohio motor vehicle operator’s license is preferred in order to carry out job-related essential functions.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees daily operation of the assigned Probation Services Section, including serving as the first line of communications for after hours emergencies.
  • Monitors show-up records to look for arrest of offenders and ensures that appropriate action is taken to address the arrest and possible new charges.
  • Reviews probationers’ participation and attendance at all court sponsored programs.
  • Meets with probation officers to staff recommendations and make independent judgments as to their offenders (i.e., revocation/violation, arrests, treatment issues, and other matters).
  • Serves as intermediate sanction by meeting with probation officers and offenders to gain offender’s compliance with court orders or serve notice of consequences for failure to comply.
  • Addresses grievances initiated by offenders.
  • Ensures progressive sanctions are followed.
  • Supervises staff in performance of job duties and responsibilities; prioritizes, delegates, and reviews work of assigned staff; ensures compliance with court policies, mandates, standards, and requirements.
  • Monitors and approves leave while ensuring office coverage needs are met; completes probationary and annual performance evaluations of staff; maintains responsibility for disciplinary actions of staff.
  • Provides input into the development of department policies and procedures.
  • Monitors outcomes, workloads, and trends through analysis of data and statistics; prepares reports and provides recommendations to improve operations and services to the court.
  • Participates in interviews and selection of job applicants; assists in training and orientation of new staff members.
  • Acts on behalf of Probation Services Manager as required.
  • Obtain and maintain Practitioner Certification through the Law Enforcement Automated Data System (LEADS).
  • Participates in training opportunities, court activities, projects, and committees as requested or required.
  • Completes other duties and responsibilities as required.
