About The Position

Join the Chatham County Juvenile Court as a Probation Officer I. The position investigates delinquent and CHINS complaints, recommends appropriate action, and supervises an assigned caseload of juvenile offenders. The officer assesses the needs of juveniles and their families, connects them with social services, and documents case progress. The role also involves preparing court materials, testifying in court, responding to crises, and working with community social service agencies. During emergencies or disasters affecting Chatham County, the employee may be required to report to work as part of a disaster operations team.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Criminal Justice, or a closely related field, and one year of experience in case management or working with juveniles; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

Candidates with direct and relevant experience may receive an offer of up to 10% above the posted minimum salary.

Responsibilities

Investigate delinquent and CHINS complaints to determine the appropriate course of action and make recommendations about detention.
Prepare social histories, risk assessments, petitions, and other court documents, and testify in court.
Supervise an assigned caseload of juvenile offenders, document each juvenile’s progress, and maintain case records.
Assess the needs of juveniles and their families, make appropriate social service referrals, and monitor and document case progress.
Analyze crises and needs to make immediate decisions.
Work closely with community social service agencies.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Report to work as part of a disaster operations team during emergencies and disasters affecting Chatham County, if required.
