About The Position

The Michigan Advocacy Program (MAP) is seeking a law student to join the Pro Bono Team, where they will work with our expungement division. They will help low-income Michiganders get a clean slate, opening opportunities for work, stable housing, higher education, and public benefits. The student will be supervised by MAP’s Expungement Project Attorney, and will be based out of MAP’s Ypsilanti office. This position can be tailored to areas of interest within the realm of criminal record expungement. For 2L and 3L students there will also be opportunities to represent clients in a hearing supervised by an attorney if desired. Students will gain hands-on experience in public interest work, including implementation of various lawyering tasks and procedures, as well as improved communication skills by interacting with courts and multiple other departments.

Responsibilities

  • Drafting briefs
  • Drafting and filing applications to set aside convictions
  • Contacting clients and conveying attorney-approved legal advice
  • Drafting eligibility letters
  • Interfacing with courts and police departments to resolve record issues
  • Representing clients in a hearing supervised by an attorney (for 2L and 3L students, if desired)
