The Financial Times is seeking an outstanding reporter to lead its US private credit coverage from New York. This is a sourcing-first role for a journalist with exceptional reporting instincts and a proven ability to build trusted relationships across the financial industry. The correspondent will cultivate deep networks among private credit firms, banks, insurers, law firms, advisers, and borrowers, transforming these relationships into exclusive and market-moving stories. The role involves covering firms that are reshaping corporate America's financing, including major players like Apollo, Ares, Blackstone, Blue Owl, KKR, Sixth Street, and Oaktree. Key reporting areas include their strategies, investment performance, competitive dynamics, and influence in global finance. A significant focus will be the intersection of private credit and the insurance industry, examining the implications of annuity and life insurance balance sheets providing capital to private credit funds for regulation, financial stability, and retirement savings. The beat will also cover the financing of leveraged buyouts, the AI boom's funding demands, refinancing for stressed borrowers, and restructurings, defaults, and creditor disputes. Success requires identifying risks before they become apparent to the broader market. The correspondent will collaborate with colleagues covering corporate finance, dealmaking, private capital, financial institutions, and markets globally, contributing to the Due Diligence newsletter and shaping the FT's coverage of this rapidly growing sector.
