About The Position

The Ministry of Environment and Protected Areas supports Albertans in being proud stewards of air, land, water, and biodiversity by leading the work required for the desired environmental outcomes and sustainable development of natural resources. The Priority Issues Coordinator supports the Assistant Deputy Minister’s Office (ADMO) within the Water and Circular Economy Division by managing priority issues, coordinating information, and ensuring senior leaders have clear, accurate, and timely materials to support decision-making. This role serves as a central coordination point across the division, working closely with branch staff, Communications, and senior offices. It requires strong judgment to assess evolving issues, identify risks and sensitivities, and ensure work is aligned with divisional and departmental priorities. In a fast-paced, high-volume environment, the coordinator is responsible for organizing and advancing work, anticipating pressures, and ensuring materials meet quality and timing expectations.

Requirements

  • University graduation in Communications, Environmental Studies/Sciences, Public Policy, Business Administration, or related field supplemented by a minimum of two years directly related experience is required.
  • Equivalencies will be considered.
  • Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of: 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 1 year of experience for 1 year education.

Responsibilities

  • Track and monitor emerging and ongoing issues across the division, identifying linkages, trends, and recurring pressures.
  • Assess information to determine priority, risk, and sensitivity, and ensure appropriate awareness and escalation.
  • Coordinate input across branches to support timely, accurate, and well-informed responses.
  • Prepare concise briefings and summary materials for senior leadership, outlining status, risks, and recommended next steps.
  • Coordinate materials through divisional and departmental decision-making and approval processes.
  • Review and prioritize incoming requests to assess urgency, complexity, and sensitivity.
  • Assign, track, and follow up on action requests, ensuring clarity of direction, accountability, and timely completion.
  • Review submissions for accuracy, completeness, and alignment with standards before senior leadership review.
  • Communicate timelines, requirements, and expectations clearly, and exercise judgment in organizing and escalating work under tight deadlines.
  • Identify and support improvements to the quality and consistency of responses and processes.
  • Monitor major divisional initiatives, supporting progress tracking and early identification of risks or delays.
  • Coordinate input for key reports, including business planning and annual reporting.
  • Track deliverables and critical paths to support implementation across the division.
  • Support the Divisional Leadership Team and ADMO-led activities, including meeting coordination, materials preparation, and follow-up tracking.
  • Provide ongoing operational support to ensure the effective functioning of the ADMO.
