Principal Web Developer (Marketing and Communications)

DaVita Kidney Care•Maxatawny Township, PA
•$98,000 - $155,000

About The Position

The Principal Web Developer, Marketing Communications is the senior-most individual contributor in the Marketing Communications developer lane. The role is accountable for technical direction, platform stewardship, and initiative-level delivery across DaVita’s public-facing digital properties. It defines scalable development standards, guides modernization and platform efforts, advises leaders on technical strategy, and serves as the primary technical partner for internal teams and agencies while remaining within Marketing Communications rather than IT. The position helps the web channel evolve safely, accessibly, and efficiently while balancing business strategy, user experience, privacy, security, platform constraints, and operational sustainability. This role leads development initiatives end to end, shapes technical direction, recommends resourcing, advises leaders, and coordinates cross-functional execution across Marketing Communications, IT, and agency partners. It owns the developer-lane playbook, platform standards, release governance, modernization strategy, agency technical alignment, and escalation for complex platform decisions. It is designed as the terminal senior individual-contributor role for the Marketing Communications developer lane, unless future expansion creates a higher-level technical leadership path. The position requires minimal travel. Occasional evenings or weekends may be required for critical launches, major incidents, vendor coordination, or strategic planning. The work environment is a moderate-noise, typical business office with computers or printers. The role involves extended computer keyboard and peripheral use, and occasional lifting of standard office equipment or materials may be required.

  • Advanced proficiency with HTML5, CSS3/Sass, JavaScript, PHP, WordPress architecture, custom themes and plugins, Gutenberg/block development, and Git-based release workflows.
  • Demonstrated experience leading complex web initiatives across internal teams, external agencies, and technical partner groups.
  • Strong working knowledge of accessibility, technical SEO, web performance, security, privacy/compliance, analytics instrumentation, and enterprise release governance.
  • Ability to define technical standards, influence stakeholders, resolve ambiguous problems, and communicate clearly with leadership.
  • Fluent written and verbal communication skills necessary to perform the position’s essential functions.

Responsibilities

  • Set technical direction for Marketing Communications web development across WordPress VIP properties, front-end architecture, theme strategy, component systems, release governance, and platform documentation.
  • Create and maintain standards for code quality, accessibility, performance, security, documentation, environment management, branching strategy, and release readiness.
  • Evaluate platform constraints, technical debt, tools, agency proposals, and modernization options; recommend approaches that balance speed, risk, and sustainability.

  • Lead complex developer initiatives end to end, including scope definition, roadmap planning, technical sequencing, dependency management, risk mitigation, and stakeholder communication.
  • Partner with IT, Privacy, Cybersecurity, Analytics, Salesforce/CRM, content, design, and agency teams to ensure solutions meet governance, compliance, and experience expectations.
  • Own technical alignment for major launches, high-risk releases, modernization milestones, and multi-site changes across public-facing digital properties.
  • Translate technical risks and decisions into executive-ready recommendations and clear options for business leaders.
  • Guide standards for WordPress VIP development, Git workflows, CI/CD, local development, environment synchronization, database refreshes, QA strategy, and production-support escalation.
  • Identify recurring operational problems and lead improvements that reduce manual effort, release risk, and ambiguity about dependencies.
  • Clarify ownership boundaries among Marketing Communications, IT, and agency partners, especially where front-end, back-end, GCP, APIs, or legacy platforms intersect.
  • Coach P3/P4 developers and adjacent digital teammates through architecture reviews, troubleshooting, accessibility patterns, documentation feedback, and technical decision-making.
