About The Position

As a Principal Systems Safety Engineer, you will work with all disciplines to ensure a safe and usable system design throughout the product life-cycle, from development to disposal. A successful candidate will have strong attention to detail and process to ensure personnel, equipment and environmental safety requirements compliance, and be able to convey technical information using strong written and verbal communication skills.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 8 years relevant System Safety experience
  • Familiarity with MIL-STD-1472 and the application of MIL-STD-1472 requirements
  • Experience with MIL-STD-882E and conducting system, hardware and software hazard analysis on complex systems
  • Familiarity with hazardous material identification and tracking (e.g. NAS-411)
  • Experience working as a lead System Safety Engineer on DoD programs
  • Familiarity with electrical safety standards (e.g. Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and National Electric Code (NEC))
  • Experience conducting safety inspections on equipment
  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 8 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience
  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance
  • Active and existing security clearance required after day 1

  • Experience with Human Systems Integration (HSI)
  • Experience with Human Factors Engineering (HFE)
  • Experience with Radio Frequency (RF) based communication systems
  • Common Product Data Management (PDM) experience
  • Previous experience in an external, customer-facing role
  • Prior experience supporting proposals and/or bids

Responsibilities

  • Conducting Military Standard (MIL-STD) 882E System Safety Program compliant tasks and analyses, involving management (task series 100), analysis (task series 200), evaluation (task series 300), and verification (task series 400)
  • Interpreting system requirements, customer specifications and military standards
  • Collaborating with other engineering functions: Systems Engineering, Software or Firmware Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Hardware Engineering to ensure a full understanding of product architecture and design, and to properly eliminate and/or control hazards to acceptable levels
  • Briefing safety considerations at technical reviews and as part of the safety approval process
  • Preparing internal and customer reports describing various analyses relevant to the System Safety program
  • Managing System Safety Working Group(s) between key internal and external representatives
  • Review, monitor, and track hazardous materials (e.g. National Aerospace Standard (NAS) 411) used throughout systems and document any mitigations that may be necessary
  • Support compliance audits that demonstrate how internal processes and procedures are used on programs
