Principal Systems Integration & Test Engineer - P5

Boston Scientific•Maple Grove, MN
•Onsite

About The Position

Boston Scientific is seeking an experienced Principal Systems Engineer to provide technical leadership for development of complex medical device systems within its Interventional Cardiology division. The role drives integration testing for complex electromechanical systems, using an understanding of clinical workflows to define common, alternate, and error-use paths. The engineer will bring structure and visibility to console testing, identify coverage gaps, and lead integration, robustness, and reliability testing to build confidence in the system. The position is a key technical contributor and leader who works with Systems Engineering, Software, Electrical, Mechanical, and other development partners to deliver safe, effective, and reliable medical technologies. It supports next-generation products and strategic initiatives across a diverse portfolio, including capital equipment, computing platforms, single-use therapeutic devices, and supporting technologies. This is an on-site role based in Maple Grove (Arbor Lakes), Minnesota. Sponsorship and relocation assistance are not available. The role is safety-sensitive and candidates are subject to prohibited substance testing.

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of experience with a bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, or a related discipline, or at least 8 years of experience with a master's degree in one of these fields.
  • Experience defining and/or testing complex multidisciplinary systems integrating hardware, software, electrical, and mechanical components.
  • Experience defining test strategies and integration test plans for complex electromechanical systems.
  • Experience leading complex system analysis from concept through commercialization.
  • Proficiency with requirements management and traceability tools such as Jama, Code Beamer, Jira, or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience in requirements engineering, including requirements development, decomposition, allocation, and traceability.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in engineering, systems engineering, or a related discipline.
  • At least 5 years of experience in a formal systems engineering role.
  • Reliability engineering experience, including life, stress, HALT, or MTBF-type testing.
  • Experience with fault injection or failure-mode testing.
  • Experience developing and verifying medical devices in an FDA-regulated or ISO 13485-compliant environment.
  • Experience supporting verification of safety-critical or high-reliability systems.
  • Knowledge of medical device design controls, risk management, and applicable international standards.
  • Experience with automated testing, scripting, and test framework development using Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW, or similar tools.
  • Experience with requirements and test management tools such as DOORS, Jama, Polarion, or equivalent platforms.
  • Experience supporting new product development from early prototypes through design verification, regulatory submission, and commercialization.
  • Experience with risk management, including identifying effective risk controls.
  • Demonstrated experience leading cross-functional technical teams and high-visibility, strategic product development initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Lead system-level integration activities across hardware, software, firmware, electrical, mechanical, and electromechanical subsystems.
  • Understand clinical workflows and use them to inform system integration planning.
  • Develop and execute integration strategies and plans, from incremental subsystem integration through full system-level testing.
  • Define and drive characterization, robustness, long-duration, stress, and fault-injection tests to build confidence in system reliability.
  • Provide technical leadership to cross-functional engineering teams investigating and resolving complex integration issues.
  • Lead system-level troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and resolution of hardware/software interface issues, unexpected behaviors, and performance limitations.
  • Collaborate with Systems Engineering and subsystem teams on interface definitions, architectural decisions, and design implementations that support integration.
  • Identify integration risks early and develop mitigation strategies to reduce technical and schedule impacts.
  • Serve as a technical subject matter expert and mentor engineers supporting integration and test activities.
  • Author or co-author test protocols and reports as needed.
  • Partner with the lead systems engineer and verification test engineers to plan design-verification deliverables.
  • Manage technical execution and communicate technical progress, risks, and recommendations to stakeholders.
  • Apply analytical methods, including modeling, simulation, mathematical analysis, and system characterization, to solve complex engineering problems and drive corrective actions.
  • Advance Systems Engineering methodologies and best practices across the organization.
