Principal Structural Engineer – Tunnels and Complex Underground Structures – Senior Technical Advisor
About The Position
HNTB is seeking a Principal Structural Engineer to provide technical guidance and direction in their area of expertise and functional discipline. The role supports technical aspects of project development and delivery, including proposal development, scope implementation, and change management. It applies advanced engineering methods, techniques, and analyses to develop solutions, make recommendations, and resolve issues, while ensuring consistent application of industry and HNTB design standards across projects of varying disciplines, sizes, and complexity. The position serves as a technical advisor on complex projects, providing designs, plans, and specifications. It supports tunnels and complex underground structures across the transit, rail, highway, airport, and water/wastewater markets. The engineer works independently with internal project teams and external client counterparts, leads technical engineering for large or unusual projects, advises project leadership, and supports and mentors production staff.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and 12 years of relevant experience, or a Master’s degree in Engineering and 11 years of relevant experience, or a Ph.D. in Engineering and 10 years of relevant experience.
- Experience in tunnels and complex underground structures across transit, rail, highways, airports, and water/wastewater market sectors.
- Recognized expertise in the technical field and experience serving as lead technical engineer for large, complex, or unusual projects.

Responsibilities
- Perform independent technical reviews and provide recommendations and technical guidance on complex or unusual engineering projects.
- Provide direction to resolve technical issues as requested.
- Provide technical expertise and advice to project leadership, and mentoring and support to production staff.
- Assist with marketing responsibilities, including proposal generation for complex or unusual engineering projects within the discipline.
- Coordinate technical aspects with client counterparts and teaming partners at the local leadership level for complex or unusual projects across disciplines.
- Develop and advise on technical consistency within and across disciplines, processes, and projects.
- Ensure consistent application of standards and practices.
- Identify and communicate industry best practices, trends, and risks through presentations, articles, and white papers.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to clients and represent the firm as a member of industry advisory committees.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
