Microsoft•Redmond, WA
•$142,800 - $304,200

About The Position

Microsoft’s Azure Data engineering team builds data platform products including Microsoft Fabric, Azure SQL DB, Azure Cosmos DB, Azure PostgreSQL, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Service Bus, Azure Event Grid, and Power BI. Its mission is to build the data platform for the age of AI and support data-first applications and a data culture. Within Microsoft Fabric, the Azure Monitor team builds services that help customers monitor, detect, troubleshoot, and mitigate issues with their services. Azure Monitor includes Log Analytics, Application Insights, Container Insights, Hosted Prometheus, Azure Managed Grafana, and other services, and provides the platform on which Microsoft Sentinel is built. The organization operates high-scale observability services for Microsoft and external customers, processing over 1.5 exabytes of logs daily and tracking over 100 billion active metrics. The Principal Software Engineering Manager will lead a team focused on ingestion gateway services handling telemetry logs and metrics for Microsoft Azure services within the broader Observability platform. The role combines technical leadership and people management: setting direction, making architecture tradeoffs, improving detection and mitigation, reducing operational toil, and turning live-site learning into lasting engineering improvements. The manager will develop team members, establish clear ownership, raise engineering quality, improve planning and execution, and build practices that maintain the trustworthiness of critical services at Microsoft scale.

  • Competence partnering across organizational boundaries to deliver shared platform outcomes.
  • Working knowledge of observability and monitoring domains, including metrics, logs, and tracing.

Responsibilities

  • Set and communicate the multi-year technical direction for a large-scale observability and telemetry platform, aligning the team’s roadmap with Azure Data’s reliability, scale, and cost objectives.
  • Lead through other leaders and senior engineers; grow, coach, and retain a diverse team and build the management and technical bench the organization relies on.
  • Own the operational health of high-volume production services and foster a durable live-site culture focused on reliability, quality, and customer trust.
  • Advance the security and compliance posture of the services.
  • Drive cross-organization initiatives and difficult trade-offs, influencing partner teams and senior stakeholders to deliver shared outcomes.
  • Cultivate an inclusive, engineering-driven environment where people can do their best work, learn continuously, and adopt modern practices, including AI-assisted development.
  • Embody Microsoft’s culture and values.
