Principal Software Engineer

A1M Solutions

About The Position

A1M Solutions is hiring a Principal Software Engineer for a fully remote, full-time, permanent position in its Technology Delivery Practice. The role shapes strategic and tactical technical direction across systems, teams, contracts, and potentially multiple government centers, offices, or programs. The engineer works with high autonomy, advises clients and teams on suitable solutions, and contributes technical thought leadership, organizational strategy, staffing, and discipline growth. Depending on the engagement, the role may involve team leadership, fractional work across contracts, or focused individual-contributor responsibilities. For this opening, the engineer will work with a small cross-functional scrum team to investigate systemic challenges in State Medicaid Enterprise System modernization. The team will interview states and vendors about implementation challenges and recommend system improvements and other interventions to the client. The engineer will also advise the contract on development of Medicaid policy analysis tools and identifying, building, and sustaining process-automation opportunities. The role combines strategic technical leadership with hands-on software engineering. Responsibilities include guiding architecture and technical decisions; building, deploying, maintaining, and supporting complex scalable solutions; working with cloud environments, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, APIs, databases, and data pipelines; and strengthening testing, code quality, AI-use, and DevOps practices. The engineer is also expected to collaborate across disciplines, mentor colleagues, advise on hiring and resource needs, anticipate government requirements, support business development, and help develop A1M’s technical practice. Applicants must work from the United States, have been U.S. residents for three of the past five years, be permanent U.S. residents, and have existing legal authorization to work in the U.S. without ongoing visa sponsorship. Employees may not reside in New York state. New hires must complete a Public Trust background investigation, including the applicable questionnaire and fingerprinting. Client meetings are virtual, and active participation—including being on camera—is an essential function. Since partners primarily work Eastern Time, flexibility in working hours may be required for employees outside that time zone. A1M is a woman-owned small business focused on improving government healthcare programs and building useful, sustainable public services. Its Technology Delivery Practice works in cross-functional, cross-organizational teams with designers and policy subject matter experts, using agile and user-centered approaches.

  • Interview states and vendors about implementation challenges and recommend system improvements and other interventions to the client.
  • Advise on development of Medicaid policy analysis tools and identification, development, and sustainment of process-automation opportunities.
  • Advise, guide, and build connections across teams and contracts to improve delivery, communication, and collaboration; assess team skills and deliverables and act on findings.
  • Build stakeholder buy-in, proactively identify risks and conflicts, identify approaches, take action, manage up, and escalate when appropriate.
  • Shape collaboration approaches across practices and disciplines, coach and mentor colleagues, and help resolve cross-disciplinary project problems.
  • Initiate and drive challenging work involving multiple disciplines; anticipate and provide information other practices need.
  • Identify and respond to government requirements and policy that may affect work, including accessibility, PRA, FOIA, acquisition regulations, and security compliance; coach others on relevant government context.
  • Represent A1M and the team to clients, including in challenging situations.
  • Operate with autonomy and initiative, anticipate opportunities and challenges, and engage with managers and leadership on discipline growth, staffing, and organizational strategy.
  • Occasionally contribute beyond regular hours, including evenings or weekends when necessary for client needs, deadlines, or strategic growth initiatives; this is expected to be exceptional rather than the norm.
  • Identify and cultivate contract growth opportunities, contribute to proposals or white papers, connect with teaming partners, and increase A1M’s visibility through conferences, blogs, or social media.
