About The Position

Protera Health is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to be the senior full-time technical backbone of their engineering organization. This role is for an individual contributor who wants to spend their time writing production code and has founder-level autonomy. The engineer will own day-to-day technical execution, write production code, and help run the software operations. The position involves collaborating with clinicians, enrollment, operations, analytics, commercial leaders, and occasionally clients or health plan partners. It is a hands-on builder role where the engineer will code full-time, own major systems, make technical decisions, debug production issues, improve reliability, and translate ambiguous healthcare workflows into simple, durable software.

Requirements

Operated at a Principal Engineer scope or equivalent, and still wants to spend time writing production code.
Deep hands-on experience with Elixir / Phoenix including LiveView.
Experienced in AI engineering techniques and tools.
Strong full-stack ability, including experience with API’s and backend systems, Python and modern data engineering techniques and systems.
Experience building and operating production systems used by real customers.
Strong database experience, especially PostgreSQL or similar relational systems.
Comfort with cloud infrastructure, monitoring, security, and production support.
Strong judgment about when to move fast and when correctness, privacy, compliance, or reliability require extra care.
Excellent communication with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Meaningful healthcare technology experience in heavily compliant systems, such as HIPAA-regulated software, patient applications, clinician workflows, EMR/EHR integrations, payer workflows, claims, care management, and digital health operations.

Responsibilities

Build and own major parts of the Protera platform, including patient onboarding, engagement, and portal workflows.
Build and own clinician workflows, scheduling, documentation support, and care coordination.
Build and own enrollment, call center, and internal operations tooling.
Build and own data pipelines, reporting infrastructure, and partner-facing analytics.
Build and own integrations with EMRs, CRM systems, analytics tools, and healthcare vendors.
Build and own AI-assisted internal tools that improve speed, accuracy, and operational leverage.
Ensure platform reliability, security, observability, performance, and maintainability.
Participate in client, payer, or partner calls to understand real-world problems.
