About The Position

The Principal Software Engineer is the software team’s most senior hands-on technical role, combining full-stack engineering expertise with cloud architecture leadership. The role sets technical direction for PRISM, IDEX’s cloud-based sensor management and data analytics software product, and related intelligent water platforms. The engineer designs and builds across the stack using C#, .NET, and Angular; guides platform scaling in Microsoft Azure; and establishes engineering practices and standards for the team. The position works with a globally distributed, remote-working team using Agile development, automated testing, continuous integration, and microservices in the Azure cloud ecosystem. The team builds software and IoT hardware that provides information about municipal water collection systems. The role partners with software leadership and teams spanning front-end and back-end development, data science, business analysis, QA, and hardware/firmware to turn business needs into technical designs. It also contributes throughout the software lifecycle, from estimation and scheduling through implementation, release, and resolution of complex production issues.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related degree, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 10+ years of production coding experience with .NET, C#, Angular, and TypeScript in an Agile environment.
  • Proven experience as a technical lead or architect on large-scale, cloud-based SaaS applications.
  • Strong database skills with Azure Cosmos DB, SQL Server, or other non-relational technologies such as Redis, MongoDB, or Cassandra.
  • Strong understanding of microservice architectures and building them in containerized, Kubernetes-managed environments.
  • Hands-on experience designing, deploying, and supporting applications in Microsoft Azure.
  • Experience building CI/CD pipelines and automated testing using Azure DevOps and Git.
  • Ability to design and implement cloud infrastructure, platforms, and applications.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with high-scale SaaS software systems built for the cloud.
  • Experience with IoT, telemetry, or time-series data at multi-terabyte scale.
  • Azure-based cloud architecture and migration experience; Azure certifications are a plus.
  • Experience integrating AI/ML or LLM services into production applications.
  • Familiarity with security and compliance practices for cloud and industrial systems.
  • Experience with Microsoft Azure, Amazon AWS, or Google Cloud.
  • Experience in the water, wastewater, or utilities industry.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the senior technical leader for PRISM and related cloud platforms, setting technical direction, engineering standards, and the long-term architecture roadmap with software leadership.
  • Design and write high-performance, scalable, secure software APIs and services using C#, ASP.NET Core, Cosmos DB, and other Azure technologies.
  • Lead front-end architecture in Angular and TypeScript, improving UI performance, consistency, and user experience across applications.
  • Design and evolve cloud architecture, including microservices, containers, and Kubernetes, balancing scalability, reliability, security, and cost.
  • Implement and manage cloud security measures to protect against unauthorized access and data breaches.
  • Develop DevOps practices, including automated unit testing, CI/CD, automated infrastructure, and approaches that improve efficiency and reduce toil.
  • Lead design and code reviews and establish engineering best practices.
  • Mentor engineers at all levels and lead cross-training initiatives focused on UI and API best practices.
  • Collaborate with front-end and back-end developers, data scientists, business analysts, QA, and hardware/firmware teams to translate business requirements into technical designs.
  • Evaluate and introduce technologies, including AI-enabled features and AI-assisted development tools, when they deliver business value.
  • Create and maintain architecture documentation and guidelines for cloud computing.
  • Participate across the software development lifecycle, including estimating, scheduling, implementation, release, and resolving complex production issues.
  • Recommend improvements to the software organization to increase throughput, improve quality, and continuously improve processes.
