Principal Software Engineer

ArloNew York, NY
$250,000 - $280,000

About The Position

Arlo is rebuilding health insurance for small businesses from first principles, aiming to maximize the portion of premium dollars that go towards care rather than system overhead. They achieve this by identifying fraud, guiding members to better care options, automating operations, and eliminating unnecessary vendors. Artificial intelligence is central to their strategy, used across underwriting, operations, clinical programs, and member experience to create an increasingly efficient insurer. The company is already operating at scale, is profitable, and is experiencing rapid growth, supported by prominent venture capital firms and a team with diverse backgrounds in technology and healthcare. This role involves building the core systems for an AI-native insurance company. Insurance operations are complex and often managed through fragmented systems and manual processes. Arlo differentiates itself by building its own infrastructure. Principal Software Engineers will collaborate with operational teams and AI Forward Deployed Engineers to transform business workflows into AI-native products and internal platforms, focusing on redesigning work processes rather than just integrating AI into existing software. The position emphasizes end-to-end ownership, including product architecture, backend and frontend systems, AI workflows, and production deployment.

Requirements

  • Deep experience designing and scaling complex software systems
  • Exceptional judgment across product, engineering, and operational tradeoffs
  • A track record of leading highly ambiguous, cross-functional initiatives
  • Strong intuition for where AI can fundamentally change workflows and business operations
  • The ability to simplify complex organizational problems into scalable systems

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in regulated industries (healthcare, fintech, etc.)
  • Strong sense of design and attention to UI detail

Responsibilities

  • Design and ship full-stack products across the insurance lifecycle, working across React, React Native, TypeScript, Python, Postgres, and modern AI infrastructure.
  • Build AI-native underwriting systems that synthesize risk, structure messy data, and assist decision-making.
  • Create claims tooling that automates review, coordination, and document processing workflows.
  • Develop internal operational platforms for teams managing millions in premiums and healthcare spend.
  • Build member-facing products that combine conversational AI, navigation, and real-time healthcare workflows.
  • Design retrieval, memory, and evaluation systems that improve reliability and operational performance over time.
  • Work directly with operational teams to identify bottlenecks and rapidly ship systems that eliminate manual work.
  • Own projects end-to-end: product architecture, backend systems, frontend experiences, AI integration, and production deployment.
  • Operate across functions, not just within them, identifying opportunities to redesign how the company itself operates.
  • Work across underwriting, claims, finance, operations, and member experience to build shared platforms, AI infrastructure, and workflows that become foundational to the business.
  • Ship quickly, work directly with operators, and build systems that create leverage across the organization.
