About The Position

The Principal, Software Engineer leads the design and delivery of scalable platform capabilities, driving technical excellence across multiple teams. This role oversees the full software development lifecycle, applying cloud-native architecture and distributed system principles to support high availability and AI/ML integration. The position requires strategic technical leadership, mentorship, and collaboration with cross-functional stakeholders to translate complex business needs into effective solutions. The role emphasizes continuous improvement, innovation, and adherence to quality standards, ensuring alignment with long-term platform evolution and business objectives within a dynamic engineering environment.

About the team: Walmart Fulfillment Services (WFS) Technology delivers scalable fulfillment solutions integrating transportation, inventory, warehouse operations, billing, and delivery for third-party sellers. The team connects Marketplace and Walmart’s supply chain by collaborating with Product, Business, Operations, Supply Chain, and Transportation partners. Combining the agility of a growth business with the scale of a global retailer, the team drives innovation and expands fulfillment capabilities into new models and international markets. Focused on technical excellence and cross-functional collaboration, the team develops impactful solutions that enhance seller fulfillment and support business growth.

Requirements

• Strong coding skills and ability to deliver production quality code.
• Extensive experience in platform engineering leadership, delivering scalable, cloud-native architectures and reusable infrastructure.
• Proven expertise in software development lifecycle management, including CI/CD, testing, observability, and incident response.
• Strong background in AI/ML integration and building intelligent software systems using languages such as Python, Java, and C++.
• Demonstrated ability to leverage advanced development tools to enhance quality and velocity.
• Skilled in technical mentorship, architectural decision-making, and fostering engineering excellence across teams.
• Excellent problem-solving and requirements analysis capabilities with a focus on customer-centric metrics and outcomes.
• Effective collaboration and communication skills to engage cross-functional stakeholders and drive innovation.
• Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 5 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.
• 7 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.

Nice To Haves

• Master’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 3 years' experience in software engineering or related area.
• Creating inclusive digital experiences, demonstrating knowledge in implementing Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standards, assistive technologies, and integrating digital accessibility seamlessly.

Responsibilities

• Be a deeply hands-on technical leader, write production-quality code, build automated tests, and take implementations all the way through production deployment.
• Lead platform engineering efforts to deliver scalable, cloud-native infrastructure and reusable tooling aligned with strategic roadmaps.
• Drive full software development lifecycle across teams, ensuring high availability, fault tolerance, and real-time data processing capabilities.
• Architect and integrate AI/ML-enhanced applications to support millions of users with advanced intelligent systems.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship, promoting engineering excellence.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to translate business needs into actionable technical requirements and measurable success metrics.
• Champion continuous improvement by adopting innovative tools and practices to enhance development velocity and quality.
