About The Position
As a Principal Software Engineer at Walmart, you will lead the design and delivery of scalable platform capabilities, including cloud-native architectures and AI/ML frameworks, to support critical business functions. This role involves driving the full software development lifecycle, fostering technical excellence, and mentoring engineering teams. You will collaborate across functions to translate complex business needs into innovative technical solutions while ensuring system reliability and performance. Your leadership will influence architectural standards and promote continuous improvement to advance Walmart’s technology vision and operational goals. About the team: The Financial Services team at Walmart develops and scales financial products across Walmart’s ecosystem, including Buy Now Pay Later, Credit Cards, Money Services. The team leads product engineering for in-store and eCommerce experiences, collaborating with external, internal partners. Operating at a large scale, the team enables millions of customers to access flexible and innovative financial solutions across Walmart, driving impactful technology and seamless user experiences. The team is embarking on a multi-year journey of building a Global Financial Services platform that will power multiple markets across the globe wherever Walmart operates and make the financial services available at global scale.
Requirements
- Extensive experience in platform engineering leadership, delivering scalable infrastructure and reusable tooling aligned with strategic roadmaps.
- Proven expertise in cloud-native architecture and distributed system design ensuring high availability and fault tolerance.
- Strong technical skills in AI/ML integration, software architecture, and model-driven design using languages such as Python, Java, and C++.
- Demonstrated ability to lead full software development lifecycles, including CI/CD, testing, monitoring, and incident response.
- Effective mentorship and leadership capabilities fostering engineering excellence and innovation across teams.
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills to engage cross-functional stakeholders and drive technical alignment.
- Commitment to continuous improvement, technical ownership, and sound decision-making balancing long-term business goals.
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 5 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.
- 7 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.

- Master’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 3 years' experience in software engineering or related area.
- Creating inclusive digital experiences, demonstrating knowledge in implementing Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standards, assistive technologies, and integrating digital accessibility seamlessly.

Responsibilities
- Lead platform engineering efforts to deliver scalable infrastructure, reusable tooling, and advanced ML frameworks aligned with strategic roadmaps.
- Architect and implement cloud-native, distributed systems ensuring high availability, fault tolerance, and real-time data processing capabilities.
- Oversee full software development lifecycle including coding, testing, deployment, monitoring, and incident management across multiple teams.
- Integrate AI/ML technologies into software products to enhance customer and associate experiences.
- Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and promote engineering best practices to drive innovation and maintain system interoperability.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to translate business needs into actionable technical requirements and measurable success metrics.
- Maintain architectural documentation and make informed decisions balancing technical trade-offs and long-term impact.
